Stirlingshire / Re: Descendants of James Stevenson and Janet Paterson

Whereas your ancestor born to John Stevenson and Agnes Stevenson was named Robert b 1772; my ancestor was his elder brother John b 1768.

I have only traced my ancestor, so I cannot speak on your info on Robert.

If you want further info on Stevenson ancestors in the 1600's; I have a little more I can post.

Cheers,

REVISED

I have refined my information and provided more detail. I have not included spouses families  childrens' birthdates but i do have them. Hopefully, this information will help me find persons sharing this information of our collective ancestry.

I strongly believe I have all of the Stevenson descendants, (including the spouses families), of John Stevenson and Janet Williamson of St. Ninian's Parish in Stirling. These individuals were born abt 1670. To be sure, I need to confirm the names of the Stevenson couples comprising the 4 generations descending from John and Janet. The generations before that point are absolutely confirmed and I can provide it..

1 John and Janet (Williamson) Stevenson had a son James born 15 May, 1691 in St. Ninian's Parish.

2 James and Margaret McGregor married on 30 July 1716 and had 4 children: Margaret: Christened 10 May 1717; John: Christened 6 September 1719; James: Christened 17 April 1722; and Janet: Christened 16 March 1725.

Margaret's Parents:
Alexander and Katherine (Thomas) McGregor: Children being: Margaret, John, James and Janet.

3 John and Margaret (Kincaid) Stevenson: Children being John Christened 4 August 1744, James Christened 20 November 1748, William Christened 20 November 1748, Frances 18 November 1750 and a further William Christened 4 May 1755..

Margaret's Parents: James and Elizabeth (Crawford) Kincaid. Children being: Margaret, John, Helen, Janet, William, Helen2, Peter, Elizabeth and James.

4 John Stevenson and Agnes (nee Stevenson): Children being John Christened 24 January 1768, Margaret Christened 17 December 1769 and Robert 22 June 1772.

Agnes' Parents: Alexander and Christian (Duncan) Stevenson: Children being Agnes, Jane Agnes, Margaret, John, Cicele, George and Robert.

My guessing of these 4 generations going forward is based on records I have  from St. Ninian's. Also, all of the children's names in these Stevenson families (and those of the spouses families) match-up and are repeated forward almost exclusively. I feel this is not merely coincidence.

I'm appealing for help here in that I've checked the Old Parish Records of St. Ninian's, and as was the practice of that time period, have only found the bride and groom's names with witnesses--no parents names appear on the marriage records.

I believe I am therefore snookered unless someone has family records passed down to them which include these ancestors we share.

Respectively, sjme

Stirlingshire / Descendants of James Stevenson and Janet Paterson

I strongly believe I have all of the Stevenson descendants, (including the spouses families), of James Stevenson and Janet Paterson of St. Ninian's Parish in Stirling. These individuals were born abt 1665-1670. To be sure, I need to confirm the names of the Stevenson couples comprising the 5 generations descending from James and Janet. The generations before that point are absolutely confirmed.

I'm hoping some hard data exists as would have been listed in a family bible of a person who shares this family history with me.

Fingers crossed someone has this info.

Lanarkshire / Re: James Muir Married Prior to Marriage to Janet Muir?
« on: Friday 15 May 15 22:53 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for looking Blemdookie, but the Janet Muir I'm searching info on has a maiden name Muir, as well as her married name. I have that info from an official document (marriage certificate) concerning their son Hugh. Also, Janet was born in Old Monkland. Further, they were polled in Bothwell during the 1841 and 1851 Census'.

James Muir (younger) is still a mystery (he was born in 1821), but I will follow-up on your search info.

I'm intrigued regarding the 1861 Census missing Janet and introducing a Mary. Does it list any children? Was it also a Bothwell Census?

Thank you IsobelW! I believe you found the correct family. My only question is who is James Muir age 20? He could be a brother of Janet since he's only 10 years younger than her (so she can't be his mother); or, a child from an earlier marriage of James Sr. Does the 1841 Census list young James' relationship to the family?

Lanarkshire / James Muir Married Prior to Marriage to Janet Muir?
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 18:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering if James Muir (Born ~1795 in Crawfordjohn Parish, South Lanarkshire) was married prior to his marriage to Janet Muir (nee Muir born in Old Monkland).
The 1851 Bothwell Parish Census records he was 56 years old (Janet was listed as 40 years old) and listed children Elizabeth (12) born in Bothwell; William (5) and Hugh (4).
His advanced age and the absence of his family with Janet in the 1841 Census suggests he could have married earlier to another woman (with whom he fathered Elizabeth) who perhaps passed away.
Any information at all about this family would be much appreciated.

Have you checked the OPR's on Scotlands People?  A quick search confirms a John Stevenson marriage on that date in Stirling but does not show a Jane Berry on the same date

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

EDIT

I have just re-entered the search for Jane as Jane B*rry and under surname options - chose wildcards allowed

It comes up with one match to that date and to Stirling so I wonder if she is mis-transcribed as Barry or Burry
Thank you CarolW for searching.
I did check the OPR on Scotland's People and did not come up with a match at all. I also checked her as Barry and as Janet. On other records she is always Jane Berry though.

Hi, Carole W
I checked the OPR on Scotland's People for John Stevenson and got the record of their marriage on 15 May 1819; but it just shows their names, no mention of parents names.
