The Egypt Medal was initially issued in 1882 and this version had a date on it, the subsequent issues were made without a date. Having looked at the medal roll some men on HMS Briton qualified for a 'battle' clasp, which was worn on the ribbon with the medal, but your man was not one, hence the no clasp comment.

You may well already know this, but just in-case, your man was awarded an undated no clasp Egypt Medal together with a Khedives Star for service in the Sudan on HMS Briton.

The FE indicates first entry i.e. when he joined the navy. The next two are the amounts and when he received his Good Conduct pay, TM notes Trained Man and he left the navy 'Time Expired' i.e. he finished the number of years he had enlisted for - 10 years.

Re the badges: GC.1 notes the award of a good conduct badge, actually a stripe worn on the sleeve, D1 notes the loss of a 'badge' and R1 its reinstatement. Important to the man because each badge earned additional daily pay, but this money was only paid out at set times i.e. 'Lady Day', and if a badge was lost so was all monies earned to that point.

You might already be aware, but FB (Former Book) at the start of service indicates he has an earlier record.

I'm afraid there is no surviving 1841 or any other census' for Ireland.

Evans had been stationed at Groomsport, rated Commissioned Boatman, since the 22 Dec 1839 and retired on 24 March 1849.

Hi

If you can get to the National Archives @ Kew your best bet is to look at the Muster Book for HMS Inconstant ( https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C770403 ) and particularly the Description Book section. This will provide a physical description and a list of all his previous ships prior to joining Inconstant. The Ship's Number from the allotment books will mean this is very quick to do.

You can do the same thing for George Pashbee.
