World War One / Re: Assistance needed Reading 'period of engagement' on RAF record
« on: Saturday 09 January 21 04:36 GMT (UK)  »
Ah! now that might actually make some sense to me.

This chap joined the army in 1901 (though why it says 1902 on this record I'm not sure) and by 1905 he was apparently an ex-soldier, and deserter, with a minor stint in jail.

The excerpt I posted is from his attestation into the RAF in 1917.

I was confused because it states that his "Prior engagement in H.M Forces: 6th Battalion Reg, from 11.2.01 to 10.2.14", when the records I had said he was no longer in service in 1905. However your comment about the 3 years in service and 9 years in the reserves would actually fit very nicely with these dates.

World War One / Assistance needed Reading 'period of engagement' on RAF record

Hello,

I recently found my Great Grandfather's military records after years of searching. I'm having some trouble understanding the notation underneath the period of engagement on the right side of this screen shot. Could anyone help me?

Thank you.

Ayrshire / Re: Blair's Charity School - Galston

Hi Looby, thanks for the info.

Your post just struck a memory in me! I was over there last year (my mum's family still live in Ayrshire so I visit a fair bit) and I suddenly recall seeing a school in town. I just pulled it up on google maps and sure enough it's right there on the street just up from the river and the mill shop. I can just make out the words at the top of the building that says School and I'm fairly sure it says Blair in front of it!

Google tells me it's 11 Polwarth Street.

Ayrshire / Blair's Charity School - Galston
« on: Saturday 15 August 20 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I've recently subscribed to the FindMyPast Newspaper archive and I'm having fun searching for relative articles. I've found one which mentions the school examination results of someone who was likely my ancestor or at least a relative of said ancestor. It's in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats gazette in 1878 and the examination results listed are for children attending 'Blair's Charity School'. The heading of that column of the newspaper is Galston, so I assume the school was in or close to Galston.

A quick google search gives me nothing, not one iota of information.

A search of the newspaper archive for Blair's Charity School does throw up a couple of other results, one of which is an article of the school board meeting for the area. In this article they refer to students that have gone to other schools and Blair's Charity School is refered to as 'Blair's' (Charity) School. This indicated to me an air of contempt about the place, putting Blair's in quotes - does this mean it doesn't really belong to Blair? and the word Charity in brackets...

Anyway, I thought I'd check in here and see if anyone else has come across reference to this school or has any information about it.

Thank you in advance for any input you can offer.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Marriage witnesses name opinions needed

Just to make matters either easier or harder, there's a second record!

The witnesses names are much clearer. There is nothing written in the brides signature area. Both records say page #216 at the top so I don't know if one was copied to the other or vice versa. This record could be the original, or could be someone's transcription of the other record and therefore not necessarily be accurate.

What were the full names of William and Hannah?

William Richards and Hannah Page, married 7th Nov 1819 in Cheltenham.

Adding a bit more of the document here, because in 10 years it's never occured to me to compare the first letter in Wills/Hills/Mills to the lettering on the rest of the document  ::)

I'm looking at the W of William and the H of Hannah, and the way the loop at the beginning of each of those letters are done, the Thomas name now looks like Hills to me.

William and Hannah are both written by someone else and marked their X, so I assume that the handwriting is the same person for all these names....

What do you think?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage witnesses name opinions needed

Hi all,

I've had this record in my possession for a number of years and I am still undecided about the names of the witnesses. I thought perhaps dropping it here for some opinions might be a good idea. Perhaps those with a better understanding of the handwriting of the era will be able to help? This is from a 1819 Marriage Banns in Gloucestershire, England.

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past - free access weekend - 7th-10th Sept 2018

I'm working on the assumption that it will work at 9am UK time. Having said that I don't actually know where Find my Past is based, I just always have used the .co.uk site so I assume British time.
