Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What did my great grandmother die of?
« on: Friday 22 March 24 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
I had a reaction to the test and consequently went for x-rays for a few years. I'm not sure where I came into contact. My mother insisted I had unpasteurised milk from the farm behind our house and my father spent some time in the local sanatorium. It could have been either or both.

After ten years plus of marriage he must have finally got the message. I don't think it took me that long. ::)

The Common Room / Re: Is this a Queen Anne Chair?
« on: Tuesday 30 January 24 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
I'm pretty sure it's a Victorian nursing chair. The legs did have castors. If it isn't there are a lot of auctioneers who are confused and it means I've undersold a lot of chairs in my career.

The Common Room / Re: Died in the workhouse: why?
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
It may have something to do with the fact that medical treatment cost money in those days whereas the workhouse was free and the cost of burial would fall on the community. My great grandfather entered the workhouse and died the next day.

It's a few years since I took the Ancestry test but I think it took 8 to10 weeks from posting to getting the results.

The Lighter Side / Re: Wedding gift lists 1930s

It's amazing how many wedding presents seem to have been put in a drawer and never used. All of our bedsheets and pillowcases are bought at auction or antique shop. From embroidered Victorian linen to fifties English and Irish cotton still in their original wrapper.

I'm reading "shoemaker journeyman", but I've only got my phone handy.

I believe that the coroner registers the death after an inquest. This certainly happened in my g/grandfathers case after he was hit by a train while crossing the station by crossing the line. Presumably the coroners verdict was sufficient to permit burial.
