Hi Andrea

I run the O'Malley DNA Project and I have done a lot of research on these O'Malley's of Cloonane and I wrote it up in this blog post ...
https://omalleydnaproject.blogspot.com/2022/04/charles-omalley-of-cloonane-1779-1871.html

I also visited the area last August 2022 ... https://omalleydnaproject.blogspot.com/2022/08/a-visit-to-islandeady-and-some-new.html

Ideally we need a Y-DNA test from a male O'Malley who still lives in the area.

My email is maurice AT mauricegleeson.com

Best, Maurice

He had a son, John Johnston O'Malley, who married Mary Keighron in 1848, and they had a child John Joseph O'Malley, born in New Ross, Wexford in 1849.

I am looking for information on Peter O'Malley who was a Lieutenant with the South Mayo Militia. He died on 4th Oct 1850 aged 67 (so born about 1783).
Any pointers would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Maurice

From that I see that among the principal local seats in Islandeady, Cloonane was (in 1837) the residence of a J O'Malley Esq.

I wonder if my John O'Malley, born around 1831, was related in someway or named for him.   ;D

I am also researching the O'Malley's of Cloonan(e). A Charles O'Malley (born c.1720) lived there, married an Alice Bourke, and is descended from Teige O'Malley c1540 as follows: Teige c1540 > Murrough c1570 > Dermot c1600 > Loughlin c1630 > Dermot c1660 > James c1690 > Charles c1720

It may be that Charles 1720 was a forbear of "J O'Malley, Esq." in 1837.

Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated.

Ireland / Free DNA tests at Dublin conference (Oct 2013)
« on: Wednesday 11 September 13 16:31 BST (UK)  »
There are some limited free DNA tests available for people with specific surnames at the upcoming Back to Our Past exhibition in Dublin, which runs at the RDS from 18-20 October (only 10 euro to get in, 5 in advance). There is also a whole series of DNA lectures - further details are on the GGI2013 website at http://ggi2013.blogspot.co.uk/p/sponsored-dna-tests.html

There is also a poll that asks how many Irish people would be interested in doing a DNA test to help trace their ancestry? (at the end of the column on the right) at http://ggi2013.blogspot.co.uk/p/overview.html. If you're Irish, please complete this poll so that we can have an idea of how popular DNA testing is among Irish people.

Bonjour everyone
I am on holidays in Montserrat and spent the afternoon in a boat with the 3x great grandson (if my calculations are correct) of Henry Dyer (1742-1788). He showed me a family tree from Henry up to the present. Dyer is not on his direct male line so Y-DNA testing would not be applicable but autosomal DNA testing might indicate a match (4th cousin or thereabouts ... 50% chance of detection). He may also know of a direct male line Dyer that might agree to testing. Either test could help confirm a connection between your branch and his and would support the current hypothesis suggested by the documentary research.
If this is of any interest to anyone please email me directly as I return to London on Wednesday and would need to contact him beforehand!!
Hope this finds you all well.
Regards
Maurice
