In several Immigration records I have seen Bracemaker as occupation of women. Wikkipedia doesnt recognise the word. I have double-checked, it's not Lace maker. I wonder if it is something to do with ladies undergarments?

The lease is on one piece of calfskin. It has a wavy top edge which indicates there were two parts. Probably a copy for each party. The two parts having their wavy edge matched for authenticity. The lease is for a thousand years, provided the annual rent was paid plus a grain of pepper. Why a grain of pepper? Just to complicate the issue or provide a legal loophole? I have contacted the local history group in Halling, Kent to see if they are interested in the content.

Thanks Jennifer, It would be really interesting to learn the meaning of the word in this context.

You may be interested to see another section of the lease document. May be common in the UK but I havn't seen anything like it before in RSA.
Stamps, one of which has a sort of lead? foil inserted into a slit and the back of the document has a very plain stamp overlaid that area.
Maybe this was a forerunner of the metal thread security measures used now in paper money.
At the top of the document is the fairly common wavy cut as a form of authentication.
