Roscommon / Roman Catholic Chappel
« on: Monday 30 May 11 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi
A couple of questions that someone may be able to help.
Does anyone know the name of the Roman Catholic chappel in the townland of Ballagh which is in the Civil Parish of Kilgefin my greatgrand parents were married in this chappel?
Also my greatgrand father at the time of his marriage in 1868 his place of residence given from his marriage cert was Fairymount  i presume this is the same  Fairymount townland also in the civil parish of Kilgefin but also in the Catholic parish of Ballagh. What is confusing is that on OSI historical maps there is a map showing a catholic parish with the name of Fairymount(Historical name Tibohine) this parish is shown some distance from the Civil parish of Kilgefin and the catholic parish of Ballagh would i be correct in that i have got the correct Fairymount given in Kilgefin.
Hope someone can help.
Many thanks

Roscommon / townland and parishes
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 12:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Many thanks for answers for my previous thread.
I know i have asked similar questions before about townland and parishes.
I have downloaded some maps of the county of Roscommon and particular of a place called Ballagh.
The map shows the townland boundaries in the catholic parish of Ballagh but in then states their historical name given as Cloontuskert,Kilgefin, and Curraghroe. Does this mean that Ballagh in the past was called all these three names but at different times also  these places are still on maps today.
The map shows all the townland boundaries in the catholic parish of Ballagh also there there are civil parishes within the catholic parish ,Lissonuffy civil parish,Cloontuskert civil parish,Kilgefin civil parish ,Cloonfinlough civil parish and Kilbride civil parish.

Roscommon / birth and babtism records
« on: Friday 20 August 10 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Hope some one can help.
I have downloaded batism records and civil birth records from the IFHF web site for a Patrick Duffy born in Roscommon  on the 9 March 1871 and the given address as Fairymount is this a village or a town?
Does anyone know what the difference is between a Church baptism record and a civil birth record.
On the church baptism record they have the mothers name as Mary McKeon parish/district as Kilbride
On the civil birth record they have her name as Margaret McKeoan and the parish/district as Ballyleague.
Two different spellings for the mother name.
On the Family Search web site for the same family the childs name is given as Patritius Duffy  the fathers name is given as Patritio Duffy and the mothers name as Maria McKeon.
Was this common practice to spell names differently depending on their denomination.
The family were Roman catholic.
Hope someone can help
Many thanks
