WOW! Impressive summary, glad you think the Boer War fits with James birthdate, sometimes I wonder if I just try to make things fit, and get it wrong because they perhaps don't actually!

Incidentally using the great new "search records" link  from within the tree, in Family Search, I found a few prison sentences for James around 1887, one can imagine a warder trying to help him and suggesting when he gets out joining the army, (or is that just fanciful)

Now I have found this
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5C5-C5D

So, IF he was a Chelsea Pensioner, (and he would qualify with 13 years army service) that perhaps would account for not showing up in the 1911 UK census, no? (thinking out loud here)

OK here we are 8 months on and no further into this particular mystery, (but it was close season on computer for the summer) now I have found another mystery, which MAY be related.

I have a copy of the death certificate for James Joseph Kilcline who died in Pontypridd in 1924, age 56,  and, according the the very helpful cemetery personnel down there is buried in a paupers grave with several other persons of different names.

His address was given on the certificate as "Lyons Lodging house" which I suspect was an annexe of the Pontypridd Workhouse.

Re the original boy from Roscommon, James Kilcline I have a record from the Boer War records saying he joined up to the 1 Battalion Connaught Rangers,  in June 1888 and gave his age as 18 years and 6 months
That could well fit in and account for him not showing on census records.

He was injured at Ladysmith in 1901 and subsequently discharged in 1901. But....IF this is the same man as my Pontypridd death certificate James, where has the middle name suddenenly come from and why does he not show in any 1911 census?

Any further insights would be fully appreciated

cheers
john

This is all very addictive!
Janey Canuck you DID give a lot of help, if only in cementing what I had already found!

Reassurance that one is on the right track is always welcome"

Now I have a John Kilcline B:1876 accompanied by Patrick Kilcline B:1878
arriving at Ellis Island, on the ship "Teutonic"  on 16th March 1899, both citing person to visit as brother Patrick in Duquesne, Allegheny, Pittsburg.

Some some help needed following them on from arriving there (I am not to hot on the American side of things)

Back to Samuel Kilcline, I though I struck lucky today, when I found a "Samuel Kilcline" on the WELSH 1901 census in Merthyr Tydfil, however by using the "search  census by address" feature in "Find My Past" I looked at the folk at that address in 1911 census and the people are the same but the name is "Holehouse" (that is some typo, Ancestry) but I have added a note to that effect for future searchers!

Samuel's death cert, states where died as "105 Stockwell Gate, Mansfield, and the informant as
L. Williams, occupier of same addess, interestingly the occupation field of the cert. says "of Cow House, Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Hardstoft, agricultural labourer"

My elder cousins tell of a brother of their father and my father , who was a tramp, and turned up once a year for a bath, food and a change of clothes. all starting to fal into place, except cannot find him being born anywhere. Unless the name was changed to Samuel from something else (what is an alternative for Samuel?)

Ellen died in the Chesterfield workhouse, whist Patrick was still alive and at home with daughter Margaret.

Wow, this is fantastic, firstly THANK YOU to Nottsgirl, I took your advice and contacted the Mansfield Crematorium, here is the reply
QUOTE
The grave number is 20967 in Mansfield Cemetery on Nottingham Road in Mansfield, also in the grave are three other people.  It is an unpurchased grave, so there is no owner or headstone according to the records.

He was 68 and was buried on 30th September 1937 and was a farm labourer.

The other three people in the grave are Richard Preece, Albert Collinson and William Hodges.

ENDQUOTE

Now the other very detailed reply from "JaneyCanuck", thank you again for all the research, It was myself who made the correction at Ancestry, regarding the family name being Kilcline and not Cline, my father William is the one named in the 1911 census as William Cline, I have his (original, not copy) birth certificate and he is Kilcline.

Now, Patrick and Ellen are in the 1881 census as "Kilcloyne" in Clay Cross.

Over the years I have heard all the variations on my surname, imagine a broad Irish broag accent saying Kilcline to a census official on the doorstep in 1881, The census guy probably wrote what he heard...Kilcloyne. By 1891 in is there as Kilcline, then in 1901 it is back to Kilcloyne, (incidentally, I could not find my grandmother Amelia's death certificate for ages, I had the burial cert, from the cemetary but NO death certificate, then I found her as "Kiloline", ) so typos are very common on my surname!

When Patrick & Ellen came to Clay Cross from Ireland they brought Ann with them but left 3 boys behind in Roscommon, one of them, John (my grandfather) appeared in the 1901 census as "Clyne" then again 1911 as "Cline", I am really keen to find where John and his brothers wee before coming to England, there is a theory in the family That John went to the USA and started a family There before returning to start another family with Amelia.

The Family Search link you post is to MY tree, so , nothing unknown to me there, but appreciate the effort.
Phew, hope this all makes sense, still have NO idea where Samuel fits in all this.

Derbyshire / James Killcline born in Chesterfield workhouse
« on: Thursday 07 October 10 17:19 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Ann (Annie) Killcline (or Kilcloyne, Kilcline) first shows up in the area on the 1881 census, with mum and dad, living at Charles Street, Hasland. she is age 5 and born in Roscommon, Ireland, move on 10 years to 1891 census and she is not there (age 15 not unusual)
Then i have her giving birth to a son James on 20-10-1896, in the Union Workhouse, Chesterfield. Next i have her on the Mormon's search engine in 1900 as a marriage to Owen Brady at St Thomas, Brampton. My cousin has been to Matlock records and the banns were read, but record of the marriage.
HELP!!
Thanks in advance
