I have the same problem. Fortunately some of the photos have been identified by elderly relatives, however I have a few that can only be guessed. It's especially annoying when I can see a clear resemblance to someone in my family now. Some good ideas have been given in this thread though :)

Yes, it could be a similar situation to Jane Eyre. You don't know if anything had happened in Monmouth - disagreement with family, death of a fiancé. Ok I might be getting a bit carried away but moves such as this one did happen. A female relative of mine moved to Australia by herself around this time. And another moved to Australia with a man she had not yet married!

Good luck with your search :)

Thanks :) So the link suggests it may be wise to preorder documents.

I don't know that you'd ever find out really. Unless you can find a family connection it may just be one of those things.

Not sure how much info you already have but I've had a quick check of the censuses and in 1891 they are still in Laughton with a daughter - Ethel b.1887. They are in Cottingham, Yorks in 1901. John's occupation is listed as 'Dist Council Surveyor & Inspector'.

Thanks for the help everyone :) Glad it's not just me!

Yes I do drive so that's fine.

I'm hoping to look at a few wills, not parish registers. Although if you're referring to the 'lincs to the past' site I find that ridiculously confusing also :-[ I swear I'm not normally like this.

Does anyone know if I need to request them in advance or if I can just turn up on the day? I will be ringing up tomorrow but it's nice to be prepared.

This is absolutely ridiculous as I'm a student and spend a lot of time in the library but...

Can anyone explain what I need to do before heading to the archives? I've been putting it off as after reading their website I'm rather confused. So according to this http://zipapps.lincolnshire.gov.uk/eArchives/default.aspx I just have to email?

And do I just need to take the reference number for the record? When it says 'no copies of this document are available' can you still view it? If so could you photograph it?

I've put this in here as I was also wondering the best time to go? Morning/afternoon etc?

Thanks for any help :) For some reason I find this really confusing.

Oh sorry! Brilliant idea!

Just checked and it's hard to tell. I would say no.

No Susworth is a village (near Gainsborough), it's Suthworth I'm having trouble with. Sorry I musn't have explained it well! Thanks though :)
