Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Todwick - VINCENT family - Non-conformists?

Wow, thanks Willsmum!
That one looks pretty likely.

I think I did look on FamilySearch a while back,  but I probably didn't enter the right info - I do get a bit bogged down with the IGI sometimes!!
I'll see if I can check out where it came from, perhaps he was baptised in the village church after all.

Thanks again.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Todwick - VINCENT family - Non-conformists?
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 13:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I'm trying to find out about a Yorkshire family called VINCENT  -  late 18th/early 19th century.

John Vincent born c1783, gives his birthplace as 'Todwick Yorkshire' on the 1851 Census.
He gives 'Rotherham' on the 1861 census and it says just born 'not in county' on 1841.
(On all three censuses he's in Wigan, Lancs - he married there I think and all the children were born there)

So I'm now trying to find clues to his parents and siblings, presumably somewhere near Todwick/Rotherham/Sheffield.

I gather the Todwick church is St Peter & St Paul.
But I've found baptisms of some of John's children and they all took place in an Independent chapel in Wigan (and later family marry in Methodist and Wesleyan chapels)
So it might be that the Vincents in Yorkshire were all Non-conformists too.

Does anyone know about any Non-conformist chapels around here? Are there likely to be any records?

I've looked at Non conformist records on BMDregisters.co.uk but all the Yorkshire baptisms etc for Vincents seem a long way away from Todwick. (Nearest were in Leeds and Howden, E Yorks I think)

Does anyone know anything about Todwick and area back then, that might help me track down John Vincent's baptism or anything else about his family in Yorkshire?
Was/is the surname common or unusual around there?

Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Lancashire / Re: Manchester engineering company - Francis Shaw & Co

Many thanks for both these replies.

The photo of the offices dates from the 1960s, so is a bit later than I'm after, but it's still interesting to see.

I also found that reference at TNA to a photo of apprentices at Francis Shaw & Co in 1917.
I emailed GMCRO a couple of months back but had no reply - I suspect it's not really the greatest timing for them right now in their temporary home!
I also had a look on the MOMI website a while back but couldn't see anything likely, though they may have lots more material that isn't listed online of course.

The Manchester Guardian might be a better bet, so I will definitely try searching the Guardian archives (and thanks for the typos tip!). Maybe there will be a death notice or obituary even, perhaps.
And I haven't heard of the Gale archive before, so that will be worth trying too.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Lancashire / Re: Wigan Lane

Hi
I'm quite interested in Wigan Lane area too!

My ancestor was a blacksmith and lived at 6 Marylebone Place (sometimes written as Mariebonne Place), Wigan Lane, 1850s-1880s.

On Google maps, part of Marylebone Place looks to be still there, but the houses there now don't look that old.
Does anybody from Wigan know this area and can tell me what's there now, if number 6 has gone?

The blacksmith's daughter (my great-great-grandmother) was a servant at Bank House, Wigan in the 1860s.
I've found Bank House on an old map, but I think it's been demolished too.
Do any Wiganers know any more?

Thanks
Gill

Lancashire / Manchester engineering company - Francis Shaw & Co

Does anyone know how I might go about finding out about the early history of a Manchester engineering company, Francis Shaw & Co Ltd?

I think the company started around the mid 1880s.
It was in Corbett St, Bradford, Manchester and I believe it was an engineering company that made machinery for rubber extruding etc.

I've found a few snippets on the London Gazette website and a few listings on Historical Directories. Also a couple of references to Francis Shaw from random Googling, but the site it took me to had no sources so I don't know where it got its information from.

If anybody can help with anything about Francis Shaw, or the company, or ideas of where else I can try, I'd be really grateful.

Hi Fiona

I can't help with your query about John Riboldi at the moment, but I think we might be related!
I have this family in my tree too.

One of my relatives has done some work on this side of the family. I'm not sure how much researching forwards he has done though, so we may not be able to tell you what happened to John. But I will see what I can find.

Cheers
Gill
