Worcestershire / Re: Lye Waste
« on: Friday 12 December 08 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
I remember reading the following on the Quinton Website:-

"The Lye Waste boasted that Coroner's inquests on infanticide were unknown in its area. There's some truth in the taunt, despite the notorious immorality of the district, but the solution was simple. Most Lye Wasters kept pigs; if there chanced to be a superfluous baby the family pig was kept on short commons for a day or so. Then the infant (somehow) fell into the sty, and in half an hour no coroner could have found, any remains to 'sit upon’".

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Mary LAYLAND TAYLOR of Redmarley D'Abitot
« on: Saturday 28 April 07 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello Mackerwithey,
I've looked at the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census and agree that they state that Mary Layland Taylors birth place was Lye. However, the IGI gives information about a Mary Ann Layland born 13 March 1798 and married to a John Taylor on  16 November 1820. The place of birth of this Mary was Leigh, worcestershire, a town about 20k from Redmarley Gloucestershire. Her mothers name is given as Elizabeth'

I hope this helps

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Halesowen parish lookup
« on: Saturday 07 April 07 16:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello ozinnz
I've just seen your posting and think by not interpreting the census properly, you may be looking in the wrong place.  The 1841 census actually says that  James was born in the county and was living in Oldbury in the Parish of Halesowen.
Oldbury was a detached part of the parish of Halesowen in 1841 and the distance between the respective town centres was about 6 miles. I doubt if the parents of James (or Thomas) would have travelled to Halesowen to baptise their son/s.
