Hello George,
Sorry, I wasn't quoting from the grave itself but from the excellent booklet of Memorial Inscriptions for Mochdre published by the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society. The inscription also records John's wife Rachel's death on 4 April 1876. Strangely, though, the parallel booklet of Burials 1813-78 refers to the burial of John Stephens of Congley (aged 48) on May 6 1847 (not 1848). Perhaps the stone was not erected until after his widow's death and a mistake was made about the year...
Best wishes, g.

To George: John Stephens died 1 May 1848 - there is a memorial in Mochdre Parish Church.
All best, g.

Fascinating to read these messages (some from people with whom I'm already in contact)  about so many people in my tree. (I'm descended in two ways from Richard Mantle and Catherine Stephens). Like Jan I suspect that the oldest Evan Mantle in 'The Mantle Trail' might be the oldest son of Richard and Catherine, who is mentioned in Richard's will. There is a baptismal record for an illegitimate Evan Stephens, son of Catherine, in Llanbadarn Fynydd in 1772 (R and C married in 1774). No connections (so far!) found between Catherine's family and the Stephens of Mochdre.
The first husband of Mary Morgan(s) (dau of Richard M. and Martha - whose surname I would love to know!)- was Stephen Pugh (Newtown, Civil Marriage, 1849); he died in 1862. Their son William Pugh (b. 1856) helpfully turns up in the 1901 census as the nephew of John Morgan, the son of Richard and Martha. All I know about Richard's second wife is what the 1861 census says (Elizabeth, b. abt 1796, Llanwyddelan).  Hope to learn more!
