Australia / Re: Michael EGAN (b.1847)
« on: Friday 25 February 11 02:52 GMT (UK)  »

I have determined that my great grandfather, Michael arrived with his mother, the widow Bridget Egan on 20 Sep 1859 aboard the ship "Abysinnian" which docked at both Sydney and Newcastle.

I am now searching for the parents of Michael from Ireland (Broadford?). I know from the ships log that his mother was Bridget Lynch, daughter of Daniel and Hannah Lynch a widower who married Patrick Egan, recorded as deceased on the arrival of Bridget and six children in Australia

Thank you for your offer to discuss this.

My primary query now seeks the parents of my great grandfather Michael Egan circa 1847 Ireland; He lived in Aberdeen, in the Hunter valley and was a widower; He married Jane Donohoe 1870 in Blandford, Upper Hunter; first child John, born 1871 near Scone, and other children including my grandfather Patrick, registered born 1872 at Hartley. The family then moved to Junee, where I think Michael worked on the State railways.

We know from the birth extract 1872  for Patrick junior, that Michael was his father and Jane Donohoe  his mother.  The name Patrick is referenced as the "Informant" with the description "Father" of "Emu Plains".  Is Patrick a priest (Father Patrick), otherwise why dows he use the term "Father"?

Any leads would be appreciated.

elizabethoz Thank You, I see, which post you reponded to now.

There are some correlations in the age of Bridget and Michael who arrived in Port Adelaide on the Cheapside with those referenced on the tombstone in Murrumburrah. Do you think there is any relationship between them ?

Further to information provided via the Hunter Valley history association I have determined that my great grandfather, Michael arrived with his mother, the widow Bridget Egan on 20 Sep 1859 aboard the ship "Abysinnian" which docked at both Sydney and Newcastle.

elizabethoz Thank You
Michael born 1847 could be son of a child of John Egan and Annie McNamara.
He would not be a direct son as there is a generation difference with their children.
Also this pedigree relates to the Egan families in Victoria, and my understanding is they were a different family lineage to Michael Egan and Jane Donohoe of the Upper Hunter, New South Wales. There could of course be some early connections.

That is interesting and I have looked at Daniel and Hannah Lynch before without conclusion but I was discouraged. - Bridget was 39 (b.1820) and this would not match the Cootamundra tombstone, also, as Bridget's husband Patrick is deceased, it does not fit with the Informant's entry on Patrick jnr.'s birth extract  (as above) indicating he was alive in 1872 and in Australia.
There were listed additional Egan children on board the Abyssinian from Tipperary on Sept 20 1859.
i)     John aged 20 (b.1839),
ii)    Daniel aged 16 (b1843),
iii)   Michael aged 12 (b.1847),
iv)   Ann aged 9 (b,1850),
v)    Bridget aged 7 (b1852)

I do NOT have the death certificates and appreciate your recommendation that this is the way to go to clear things up.

Annie, yes very young.
There is also a marriage of Jane Donohoe (1879-1962) and John F Egan (1870-1953) in 1913. Their researchers also claim the Murrumburrah tombstone records, to which, I would point out the age and dates on the tombstone.  I have a photograph of that tombstone which is a shared plot and indicates the following burials:

Michael Egan  died 16 March, 1925. aged 79 years...................... (b.1847)
Jane Egan died 3rd August 1926, aged 78 years .........................(b.1848)
Bridget Egan died 18th July, 1888 aged 77...................................(b.1811)
John Egan died 28 Dec.1921 aged 51 years............................... (b.1870)
Catherine Keogh died 30 Dec.1910, aged 34 years

A Catherine Egan b.1876 in Murrumburrah married Patrick Keogh in 1910
A Catherine Egan died in 1910 in Murrumburrah as above.
Any information on this would be helpfull.

The death of Michael (79) correlates with the arrival of a Michael on the "Cheapside" (arrived Port Adelaide on 10-10-1849). The age of Bridget arriving on the same ship matches the tombstone in Cootamundra which states Bridget was 77 when she died in 1888.
In this discussion below ("elizabethoz" item 13 and 15), there is the probable connection of this group to the Victorian lineage of Egan.

There are sufficient annomolies for those referenced on the headstone to question whether or not Michael and Jane returned to the Upper Hunter from Hartley district after the birth of Catherine in 1876. It appears there may not be the confirming evidence to link the later births in Murrumburrah to the same Michael Egan.

Thank you Debra and Annie and elizabethoz

Yes I have the marriage certificate which shows Michael was a widower, and there is unfortunately no entry for the parents of either Jane or Michael. I have not been able to trace the previous marriage.
I believe a 12 year old Michael was aboard the Abyssinian and daughter Maria who married A.Pollock of Camperdown, Sydney was the depositor.

This is an extract dated 17 Nov.1890 and states at the bottom "I, Charles Hart Townley Pinhey, do hereby certify that the above is a true copy of an entry in a Register of Births kept at the Registry General's Office, Sydney". Michael's age and place of birth is 25 years and he was born in Ireland.
