Hi Dave, thanks for your reply.

There are a few references to Robert Chapman's life in NZ in books and these state he was from Ilkley, but I haven't found any official sources.  Both marriage and death certificate just say Yorkshire.

He married in NZ in 1851 which is before the NZ Marriage Act, so details on the marriage record are very brief, no parents names listed or place of birth, Robert is aged 35 in 1851.  His marriage and death certificate state his name as Robert Chapman, the only reference I have ever seen to father John Roberts was on the death certificate.

Is all a bit of a mystery!

Thanks for your help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Ilkley Parish Records - Robert CHAPMAN 1815

Hi,

I am trying to find a birth record for Robert Chapman who was born about 1815-1816 in Yorkshire, possibly in Ilkley.

Robert left England about 1838 and went to Australia and then to New Zealand.  He died in Melbourne in 1882 aged 67, his death certificate states his fathers name is John Roberts and he was a farmer, but I am unsure if the surname Roberts is correct.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Ken, thanks for your reply.

No unfortunately I don't have any other information or evidence that he actually served in the army, just the family notes (handwritten faimly tree from about 20 years ago).
As Thomas Wilson is a relatively common name, I was hoping there might be records somewhere with next of kin, date of birth or something like that to match, but guess not.

Thanks anyway, appreciate the help.

Thanks for your replys, those sites are really useful.

My problem is there are quite a few T or Thomas Wilson's, and I dont know his rank or regiment and am not very familar with army terms so is all a bit foreign to me.

I can see from the 1881 and 1891 censuses that he lived in London and was a painter.  In the 1901 census his wife is listed as a widow.  Family records I have say he died in the Boer War, but I don't know any more than that.

I see there are 2 T Wilson's listed on the Royal Artillery Memorial, London http://www.roll-of-honour.com/cgi-bin/boerwarartillery.cgi, could he be one of these?  I really have no idea about the ranks but presumably not the Sargent Major if he was a painter before the war???  Could he be the gunner, is there anyway to find out more about these people?  I am guessing here really so any more suggestions would be great!

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Crisane, thanks for your reply.

I have the names of 12 children listed on a family record (unknown origin so may not be accurate).  Names are (in this order on list)
Ernest
Fanny
Ellen
John
Robert
Rosetta
Joseph
Angelina
Annie
Martha
Alfred
Walter

I have found Robert Rix death cert in 1901 so might order that, hopefully will list names of children so can check them.  I am assuming there are 12 children because of this list, but maybe it is wrong, and then Fanny could be Angelina, or Annie maybe?

Hi Sani, thanks that is interesting.

I don't have a James Rix on my tree but could be related, maybe a brother of Robert Rix.  Can I just ask you to check the dates you gave me - You say  Martha married James Rix in 1881 and died in 1882 - is that right???

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Annie, thanks for your quick reply!

Is the Ancestry tree you are looking at called Fear Family Tree?  That is my tree, but I need to update it.

Angelina is one of the other children (there are 12 according to a family record, I think Fanny was born before her).  I have a copy of Fanny's marriage certificate that says she is 29 in 1892, she died in NZ in 1945 aged 86.  So I am estimating her birth date is between 1859-1863.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm looking for information on Thomas Samuel WILSON who died in the Boer War around 1900.  He was from London and married to Eleanor Barnes.  Are there any records of deaths in the Boer war?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Jenny
