The Common Room / Re: Wills & Probate Sealed in London 1915
« on: Friday 06 September 13 07:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Have you checked for a Scottish will as he lived and died in Scotland? If property was owned in England or Wales then the information given in the previous post would apply

'The sealed wills/grants in the probate index are when property or money in a bank, a trust fund etc are outside the jurisdiction of the country where the will is being proved. In this case the 'outside' country is England or Wales and the country the will is being proved in is Scotland.'

http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/wills.asp

You wouldn't find anything in the probate registry for England and Wales other than the indexed reference to the fact it was sealed.

Hi Andrea

Welcome to Rootschat. Rootschat policy is to remove emails for the safety of the website members. London and Middlesex / Re: Seeking Orphanage records for London 1945
« on: Saturday 22 June 13 04:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi

If your father was in care in a Middlesex or London County Council care home and not a privately run home managed by a charity then it is worth reading the information in the London Metropolitan Archives guide on how to proceed further with your enquiries. The MCC and LCC were responsible for children's care between 1930 and 1965. The individual London Boroughs took over this responsibility in 1965.

Hi

The London Borough of Havering cemetery records and cremation records (South Essex Crematorium) are online at the website Deceasedonline. The link is in the Rootschat London Burial Guide which also gives information when the records go up to just in case later records are not covered online.

Hi

He is likely to be buried in a London civic cemetery. Unless you think he may have been buried somewhere where he lived earlier the first place to enquire would be the London Borough of Wandsworth cemetery office if that is where he died and was living last.
The link is in the Rootschat guide to London burials at the top of the London board.

Hi

He married as Charles Strickland and as buried as Charles Strickland. There is no second name given on his children's baptisms or on his will.
Catherine's burial at St Mary Lambeth was 4th April 1836 aged 53 which would give her age as 5 years older than her husband.
Their first child Elizabeth born in 1814 was baptised at St Margaret Westminster father's occupation coffee merchant. By 1816 Charles was a chocolate maker in Lambeth so the family was perhaps in the coffee trade before Charles branched out into chocolate.
As both Catherine and Charles' surname was Strickland the direct connection to Henry if there is one may be through Catherine (who made her mark on her marriage).

Hi

I would ask for further advice from the Rootschatters on the relevant Irish county board on Rootschat. They will be the experts on Irish records.
