Aberdeenshire / Re: New Deer Cemetery Records - Milne Family
« on: Monday 13 March 17 09:47 GMT (UK)  »
Some years ago I undertook a task for ANESFHS to try to cross reference the MI's, OPR and grave digger records for New Deer.  I was given data bases of the OPR and digger records so haven't actually seen them myself.  I ended up with a linked spreadsheet of the data and also included the few lair records that I had.  This was sent to the ANESFHS although I don't know what happened to it.  I retained a copy which I find most useful.

There is a grave digger record for New Deer for a John Milne of Turfhill who was buried on 24 May 1853.  He was "laid into graff at head of George Robertson's lairstone Allathan".  This is lair 438 which also contains a Mary Knox died 1809 - my records of lairs are incomplete.  There is a gap in the grave digger records between 3 October 1853 and 7 January 1857.
There is no mention of Margaret in any of the records I have.

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: George Batey
« on: Friday 31 January 14 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Ellen Boutland was the daughter of John Boutland who was one of only 30 survivors of the Felling Pit disaster of 1812.  Her grandfather and uncle of the same surname were killed in that disaster.  Her grandfather was a half brother to the father of the William Boutland who founded the Boutland Shipyard at Heworth.  How strong the family ties between these branches at that time can not be known.

There had a been a family story passed down one branch of the Boutland family that relatives had been killed in the pit disaster but for a long time no evidence could be found to support this.  Evidence was recently found so don't give up on these family stories there could well be some truth in them.

A bit late on this one, but I do have the following which indicates that George Batey (married to Sarah Johnson) probably was the brother of John of the tug company.  All the children of John Batey and Hannah Brown were registered at the Baptist Church of Tuthill in Newcastle upon Tyne and the images can be seen on Ancestry. They are listed as follows.

Entry 69, John, 1st child, born 1 May 1811 at Willington Mill
Entry 70, Frances, 2nd child, born 19 February 1813 at Gateshead St Mary
Entry 71, Atkinson, 3rd child, born 9 April 1815 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 86, Mary Ann, 4th child, born 14 January 1818 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 87, George, 5th child, born 21 June 1820 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 114, Surtes, 6th child, born 22 February 1822 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 115, George, 7th child, born 12 May 1824 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 129, Thomas, 8th child, born 1 May 1826 at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Entry 134, Hannah, 9th child, born 5 December 1827,  at Pilgrim Street, Newcastle

The age and location of birth in the various census returns for George & Sarah tie nicely with the one listed above and I think that the family rumour of connection is correct.

There is one other circumstantial piece of information which may or may not help.  George's son George Johnson married a Hannah Dodds who was the daughter of Ellen Boutland.  She was a member of the Boutland family at Heworth who founded the shipyard at Felling.  At the time of their marriage, it can be conjectured that there would be contact between a family operating tugs and one building ships.

Monaghan / Re: Barnwell born in Donagh
« on: Saturday 15 June 13 22:39 BST (UK)  »
I have now discovered, from his Chelsea Pension record, that Samuel died on 8 April 1848 but no location is listed.  He did not die in England, Scotland or Wales so it is assumed that he died somewhere in Ireland and it was likely to have been in Monaghan.

His suspected brother James died 14 August 1847 in Liverpool.

Any suggestions where I can look for further information.

Monaghan / Barnwell born in Donagh
« on: Friday 07 September 12 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on SAMUEL BARNWELL who was born about 1781 in Donagh.  He joined the 18th Regiment of Foot in 1804 and served in Jamaica.  He was discharged in 1821 with a pension from Kilmainham and married CATHERINE MILLIGAN.  They had a number of children at unknown locations and the first indication of location was in 1841 with the birth of a daughter in Kilmore, Monaghan - probably at Drumaclan.  He was dead before 1856 when one of his sons married in Scotland.  One of his other sons was at Drumaclan for the Griffiths valuation and at least one grandchild (by a daughter) was also born there.

There was also a JAMES BARNWELL born about 1780 in Donagh who joined the army (22nd Foot) in 1799 and was also discharged in 1821.  He received a pension from Chelsea.  Nothing more is known.

Also a WILLIAM BARNWELL born about 1793 at Donagh.  He was convicted of burglary in 1817, sentenced to hang but actually transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1818 where he died in 1826.

Samuel and James I suspect are brothers with the likelyhood that William also was.  I can find nothing that confirms birth or parentage of any of them.  Samuel's family were Catholics - the religion of other two is not known.

Can anyone help, connect or point me in any direction where I may find any other information.

Referring back to the original query in this thread, the William Barnwell at Drumaclan, Kilmore did indeed end up at Jarrow with some of his brothers and sisters and his mother.  This is shown in the 1911 Census when his daughter Mary Ann (born about 1859) declares her birthplace as Drumaclan, Monaghan.

Northumberland / Re: John Pye

Diddy
I have just found this thread and can throw some light on the Pye family going back a few more generations.  A summary follows.

As has been already stated, John Pye (20 May 1779) married Jane Turnbull at Newburn 26 May 1801.

His parents were John Pye (15 Sept 1741, Seghill) who married Mary Pye (c1749) 15 May 1776 at Wallsend.  They died 22 March 1813 and 14 July 1803 respectively at Seghill.

His parents were James Pye (14 Jan 1709/10 at Stannington) who married Mary Dixon 28 Apr 1739 at Five Mile Bridge, Longbenton.  Buried 19 May 1796 and 12 Jan 1794 at Earsdon having died at Seghill.

His parents were John Pye and Margaret Reedhead married 3 June 1701 at Ponteland.  He was buried 10 Oct 1751 at Stannington.

He appears to be one of the sons of Ralph Pye and unknown Elizabeth.  They died 1729 and 1719 at Ponteland.  The name Ralph is handed down the generations.  This particular part of the family has not been definitely confirmed.

I have more information on these people as I am descended from one of the sons of John and Mary Pye myself.  Much of this information has come from two other Pye researchers.

Jim

There is another group by the name BARNWELL in County Durham based in South Shields.  These are apparently unrelated to either of the two groups we are looking at and appear to come from Yorkshire.
