Yes, my whole family is still in NZ. Mostly in Ashburton now.  Harold was never married.  I have never heard of any Wills or Purdies in my family.  Maggie Smith was my great grandmother, she was born in the Orkney Is. And emigrated to NZ.  She died in Hokitika in 1945.   I will be in NZ in November to visit my parents etc...

I have never seen Maggies hand writing would it be possible to take a photo if it or some how scan it?  I do have samples of Jim Smith's writing...

Many thanks,

Neil

Good afternoon.  Yes, Maggie Smith was Harold Warwick Smith's mother.   Can I ask where are you?  I'm keen to know more about this.  Thank you, Neil Smith, California.

WOW!!  That is an amazing pile of stuff to go through... I'll try & do it tomorrow or the next day. It's getting late here & I need to go to bed.

BUT, quickly...  I went to Thompson's Funeral Directors in Hokitika -Ii think it was in 2000. And sure enough they still had the original book / ledger from 1931. Sure enough we found him... NO date of birth or any other important data.  Another blind alley.

But again many thanks...  I'll wade through the links you left me in the next couple of days.  I need to fit it in between work & every thing else going on....

I have some documents including the marriage lines copied from the original register & a print out of the official document.  I'm afraid there really is much more than I have already mentioned.

If you are interested in taking a look at the documents I'd be happy to forward them on via Email.  They were married in the Anglican Church at Tapanui.

Again, many thanks....

I never thought that perhaps Myra could be Mary?  It seems like a pretty major mistake, but I'm sure stranger things have happened...

I suppose if a Charles married to a Mary with a child "James" in the 1850's or 60's could be a major clue...

It seems a bit daunting...  Mary Smith, there must be thousands of them....   :o  I wish I had their middle names!!

Again, a really big thanks for all the help!!!

Thank you Jamjar & Leandra.  But since James was born around 1854 I suspect the Charles & Myra Smith marriages you found maybe to late....

This is the curse of the Smiths....    ::)

Big thank you to everyone who replied...  I'll try to answer your questions....

James Smiths Death certificate states:

77 yrs old at death on 11 Fed 1931

Married at age 27, 19 Feb. 1880.  His marriage Cert. says age "Full"

Born in Warwickshire - no town listed, just the county

Parents listed as Charles & Myra Smith

So from deduction I'd say he was born in 1853 or 54 - it says 1854 on the headstone.

As for the Lutterworth sailings I think he went out to NZ on the 28 Dec. 1872 sailing.
All this hangs together until you read the NZ Cyclopedia article. There is a link to that in this thread. Its says James was born in 1857 & came out to NZ at age 16.  Personally I feel the article is wrong.... Just a feeling as all the other evidence points to 1853 or 54.  What does everyone think?

On his headstone it says 1854 - I have a photo.  I have had no luck in finding further evidence of his exact birthday or his birth place.  But everyone in the family always said he was born in Warwickshire.
