Wexford / GLASCOTT FAMILY
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 18:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a ton of information on this family from Wexford which I am delighted to share. BUT  I am particularly interested in a mystery which has been passed down through the family for generations. Here is what I know:

Francis B Glascott of Pilltown (born 1723) married Sarah Stephens Mar 18 1754. They had these children:

Thomas
John
Margaret
Elizabeth
Francis
George  and
William

I am principally interested in John from whom I descend.

John married Susannah Tree (born Boston Jan 20 1765 to Francis Tree and Bridget Murphy - the couple and their children later moved to Newfoundland where Mrs Tree operated a hotel in the Ferrylands area). I don't know if Susannah and John married in Newfoundland or Ireland.

John was known as John Glascott of Creacon . He and Susannah had children:

Sarah (born about 1792 and remained in Ireland and married Thomas Hasler or Haslett Sept 14 1814). I have not been able to track this branch down

Francis (died unmarried having been a midshipman in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars)

and the 4 children who were sent to Canada after their parents died:

Lucinda  born 1795 (married John Publow in Canada)
Anne  born 1800 (married John Vanexan in Canada)
John born 1802  (lived in Brockville Ontario in 1871)and
William born 1805 moved to Wisconsin in the 1840's

Family history says that since the parents died when the boys were too young to inherit the estate, their uncle was put in charge to hold it in trust for the boys. Instead, he shipped the children to Canada in 1819 aboard the ship Thomas. Their parents died - James in 1817 and Susannah in 1818.

I assume that there would have been a will somewhere leaving the brother (Reverend William Glascott) in charge and I am assuming that there should be land transfer records showing him acquiring the properties but I can't find anything so far.

The properties were considerable from what was said in the diary of William (born 1805) and I would like to know where they were and if the family "legend" is true

I would appreciate any help I can get on this one.

Tipperary / EAGLETON, JAMES and family
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 17:38 BST (UK)  »
JAMES EAGLETON (whose birth date I do not know but whose spouse was Mary MacIlroy was born about 1795 likely in Tipp as well but at least in Ireland).  James and Mary had at least 3 children that I have found so far:

Mary Jane 1823
Margaret   birthdate unknown  and
Catherine 1830

They appear to have been protestant yet Catherine was baptized in the catholic church.

The family came to Canada before the children were born and Mary and James MAY have actually been married in Canada. Here is what I know of them after they are in Canada:

The earliest record I have for an Eagleton is on the 1840 census of Wolford Twsp in Ontario. There, I found HUGH EAGLETON with 2 male children and 1 female child as well as a wife. It may well be that this is James' father and family living in Merrickville in 1840. I have not proved this as yet.

In the 1846 report of the Licensing Commissioner for Johnstown District James Eagleton owns an inn and is listed as:
Eagleton, James  Merrickville. Has 6 rooms, 5 beds, Stabling for 6 horses, yard, shed all in good order.
This was reproduced in the Leeds and Grenville Genealogy Society newsletter of July/Aug 2004.

James was the proprietor of  the Exchange Hotel in Merrickville. There was a William Eagleton who was also an innkeeper in Lambeth, Middlesex at the same time. I don't know if there is a relationship

In the 1851 census of Wolford, Grenville Distr 104, James Eagleton is listed as a labourer, Irish and living in a 1 1/2 story frame house.

In addition to the children shown, there may have been a daughter Elizabeth Eagleton but she died as a spinster at age 50 in 1883

Daughter Catherine  married Robert Reid on Sept 15 1849 in Merrickville. The witnesses were Margaret Eagleton (actually spelled Egleton in both cases) and James Aicheson.

In the 1861 census for Merrickville, James is 65 and an innkeeper (District 96, page 8)

It would seem that James died before 1863 since he is not in  the church register after that date. He definitely died before his wife did in 1884 in Merrickville

If anyone can shed any light on any of these eagletons and where the family came from in Tipp, I would appreciate it greatly.

Monaghan / CORBETT, JAMES and family
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 17:23 BST (UK)  »
James Corbett was born approximately 1787 and our family history has it that he was from County Monaghan Ireland.  His wife was Elisabeth (surname unknown born about 1799 in the same county). They had children as follows:

George 1824
John 1825
James 1827
Robert 1829
Jonston 1829
Samuel 1832
Thomas 1838

I am certain that there were daughters as well but I have not found any. There may have been an Elisabeth married to  McQuaig or McQuade as I have a photo of "Aunt Betty McQuaig Co. Monaghan" She may, however have been jame's sister rather than child.

The family came to Canada about 1846 and settled in the Smiths Falls area although in 1853, George is married in new York State to Sarah Rachel Shaw (whose family was from Yorkshire and had come to Canada in 1831)

If anyone has any information on this family or can place James in Co. Monaghan in 1841 perhaps, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

One Name Studies: A to G / Re: CRABB, CRABBE & CRAIB (anywhere, any time)
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I am afraid this won't help much - it's more of a query about MY family. I am intrigued by a lady named CHARLOTTE CRABBE RHIND who was born In Toronto Canada 1876 to parents Alexander Rhind(b 1838 Aberdden) and Ann MacDonald (b 1837 Aberdeen)who were originally from Aberdeen Scotland having come to Canada about 1870.

I cannot yet find a link to the Crabbe family and am curious as to why Charlotte would have been named Crabbe. In this family, it is usually the maiden name of a female ancestor but I haven't found the link yet.

If you have anyone submit a possible connection to MacDonalds or Rhinds, could you please let me know?

Thanks.

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Margaret MacRae
« on: Saturday 03 September 05 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Don't know that I am much help but I have Margaret Macrae as well. She was born Margaret Fraser abt 1775 and married Peter Macrae in Logie and Wester Urquhart in 1793 near Inverness Scotland. They had children including a Duncan born 1798 in Logie and Wester. He married Mary Bruce and had a daughter Margaret born 1832 in the Wick area of Caithness.

Duncan's younger sister married a John Oatway in England and came to Canada about 1842 and went to Brockville first and then Perth.

I don't know if there is a connection, but thought the names were similar enough that I would add it to your hopper and see what ame of it.

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Alexander Fraser born where?
« on: Saturday 03 September 05 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I have Frasers from Logie and Wester as well and have had no luck looking for them. I wondered if you had ever run across the family at all.

Margaret Fraser was born about 1775 in Logie and Wester (parents unknown) and married Pater Macrae in that parish May 2 1793 (although he is called Patrick in this record, I believe him to be the right fellow). They had the following children (that I know of)

James (1794),
Mary (1796),
Duncan (1798),
William (1801) and
Ellen (1802).

I have found some records for all of these except Ellen . All of the records show that the children are born in Logie and Wester. Nothing has been found at all on Ellen and her birthdate is approximate and taken from her own records here in Canada.

The McRae family moved to the Wick area - I don't know if all of them went and I don't know when. I know that Duncan and Ellen were both in Wick (Duncan in the village of Sarclet with his family). Ellen always said she came from Wick.

She married John Oatway in England about 1835 and later came to Canada with her children. They came to Brockville Ontario  first and then to Perth.

There were Fraser relatives in the Brockville area in the 1840's but I don't know who they were.

If anyone has any ideas about this family, I would appreciate hearing from them. I had hoped to be able to pinpoint their origins before we leave for Scotland Sept 9 and have so far not had much luck!!

Thanks

Caithness / McRae, Fraser
« on: Friday 25 February 05 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
Margaret Fraser (born about 1775) married Peter McRae (born about 1775) and had a daughter Margaret Ellen or Hellen McRae (September 23 1802 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland). Ellen left Wick sometime before 1835 as a nursemaid for an officer's wife who was bound overseas and had 3 children one of whom was sickly. The sickly child died in England and Ellen was bought off and stayed in England where she married John Oatway and had her first child in Barstaple England on May 24 1836. She had 2 more and then she and her husband left for Canada. They stayed in Brockville Ontario for part of a year where a 4th child was born.

There were Fraser relatives already in Canada at that time. I do not have any names.

I have a lot of information on the family in Canada but nothing other than Ellen's parents names. I cannot find Macraes on the Wick census and suspect that they came from elsewhere.

Ellen may have had a brother Peter Macrae who I have found as a soldier during the right time frame. I also found a 4 year old boy on the 1841 census of Wick whose name was Peter macRae but he was on his own more or less as far as the records were concerned.

If anyone has information about Peter MacRae and his wife
Margaret Fraser living in Wick, Caithness in about 1840, I would appreciate hearing from them.

Aberdeenshire / Connon, Rhind
« on: Friday 25 February 05 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
George Connon married Jane Rhind  on June 29 1848 in Aberdeen. She was born Feb 3 1829. They lived at 216 George St in the 1861 census. With them are Jane's brother Alexander Jr age 24 and her sister Helen age 31. George and Jane had two children on that census - Isabella Rhind Connon and Jemima Connon ages 12 and 10 respectively. Also with them is Margaret Davidson and her two children Margaret and Agnes ages 13 and 11 respectively.

I am tracking the Rhind connection. Alexander Jr, Jane and Helen are the children of Alexander Rhind and Isabella McCombie both of whom died before 1865.

Alexander Jr (b 1837) married Anne McDonald in 1865 and came to Canada about 1869 with his children Jane and Alexander Jr. Anne's parents (Alexander McDonald and Anne McDonald) also came to Canada. I am certain that there were still family actively involved between Canada and Aberdeen in the 1940's and would like to track them down. Alexander Jr may have also had a brother Joh who came to Canada as well.

If anyone has any information about this part of the Rhinds - or the Connon connection - either in Canada or Scotland or the preceding generations, I would like to hear from them.
