Canada / Help to find Grt Uncle
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 06:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Samuel Orr was born in Scotland in 1859 and last appears in 1881 on the Scottish Census aged 21, a medical student in Edinburgh.  Family lore has it that he was not happy with his father's ambition that all his sons be doctors that he 'ran away to Canada and changed his name'.  His father was Samuel Kelly Orr and his mother Mary Ann nee Balfour.  Someone must know the end of his story! Maybe you can help me piece it together.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Orr-4926

What we know is she was Irish, and Catholic.  Family lore is that she was being abused at home and so she 'ran away to Australia' on another girl's ticket, because that girl didn't want to go.  We have to date not managed to find any records that could be her in Ireland (that could be entirely due to our dodgy efforts!) or possibly she took the other girl's identity in Aust. so we are unable to go back any further.  The only time she is known to speak about her past was to admonish her g'daughter for talking about Ned Kelly because she was related to Ned Kelly's mother! No idea if that was true or wishful thinking, but I guess worth keeping in mind. I have referenced her here for information. http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/kelly-ellen-13021

Ireland / Margaret McGuinness

Hi,
Needing help to find Margaret's family in Ireland.  What we think we know: Margaret was born abt. 1860 to parents (from her marriage cert.) Patrick McGuinness and Margaret McCleverty.  She emigrated to Australia and married in Brisbane, Queensland 11th Jan, 1883.  We know her Australian life very well, but apparently she was always reticent about her past and thus not much is known before her migration here.  She was Roman Catholic. Thanks in advance,
Sarah Ward.

Thanks cupoflife for all your helpful information!  It certainly opens ones eyes to quite a bit of history....as always not always palatable!  Gives some sort of indication as to what sort of a life many of our ancestors led!

Australia / Vivienne Olwyn Ward/Bligh/Birch
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 07:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can someone please fill in some gaps for me?  Vivienne Olwyn was born BLIGH to Martin Bligh (d. 15/10/1956) and Sophie (Sophia) Mummim (Mummin or Mummims/Mummins).  Martin and Sophie/a were married on 10/9/1913.  Vivienne married Ian MACDONALD then John WARD and was married to George BIRCH when she died on 10/6/1974.  Can anyone tell me any details about Vivienne's birth (when, where etc.), siblings etc.
Thanks!

Thanks for your informative reply :D it rather looks like I might need some help from people nearer than I am in Australia.  Perhaps someone living nearby might be able to look up some more information for me.

Kilkenny / FANNING
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have records on the family tree of Edward Fanning (Paulstown - perhaps not correctly spelt - Kilkenny) who emigrated to Australia in the 1850's.  He came to join his 'girlfriend' Bridget White who had emigrated from the same place a couple of month earlier (she paid the immigration bond).  Edward's parents were Michael Fanning and Catherine m/s Murray and Bridget's father, Richard.  Can anyone tell me any more about these people.
Many thanks,

Thanks Elwyn, It rather looks like her birth would have been before the records :( - do you have any further ideas as how to find out, or will I just have to live with that? (Obviously my knowledge of Irish geography and history is pretty poor!)

Would be very grateful if someone could give me some information on the following:
Margaret McGuiness born abt. 1861 apparently came to Australia on "someone else's ticket".  She married in Australia and gave her birthplace as Kathmelton, Donegal, Ireland and her parents as Patrick McGuiness and Margaret McCleverty.  Perhaps someone out there can shed some light on this.  As always the RootsChat community are just wonderful.
