Here is an account where they say it almost happened to another ship's officers...( last paragraph )  :P

I wonder if Captain Ross Mattson was related to the ancestors  ;D Matt's son or Matsson being the original form of the name, father Mats/Matt
( p.s. there are lots of Isaac Mattson, Matson listed here http://search.labs.familysearch.org  )

Have you ever contacted anyone descended from George Matson & Rebecca Hoar to see if they have more?
( Helena A (Matson) Brinkman c.1851, Thomas Wm Matson c. 1852 ( also a master mariner) George Matson c.1857, Rebecca ( Matson) Frazer c.1856, Harriet E. (Matson) Watts c.1861)

As you say Isaac is an unusual Matsonname however,I  do know that some are tight with their money (joke).
Isaac Matson (dob 14.7.1829)
This was the youngest son of John (1) Sweden
He is thought to have been the victim of cannibalism on the part of his crew when they lost the trade winds and provisions ran out.  His crew were subsequently hanged.  I have nothing to substantiate this but I understand that this information was gathered by Douglas Matson, through conversations with his father and other relatives.  I the story is true, there must be a record somewhere.

Troods, I am conferring with Michael Matson of Dublin family, originally from Cork.
The 1st known of this line is a Capt. John Matson forn 1790  in Gothenberg,
Sweden who moved to Cork and married a Rebecca Wheeler.  I even have his photo when he was much older.  Their children were Benjamin b. 1816 d. 1890
Thomas b. 1819 did not know what happened to him ( I think he is our descendant)
John b. 1822 George b. 1824 Isaac b. 1829 (died at sea)
In the 1830s in Newfoundland there were 3 Matson Captains, John Thomas and George.  I think these were him and 2 sons.  I have a lot of info too much to send, I was previously 99% sure we were from Hull,, I thinkk I was wrong.  I also have photos of  Johns Sons (2)  Regards  Ken  Matson.
PS  There is a lot of likeness in the photos, especially of your George and John Jnr.  Perhaps DNA will work it out.

The booklet I have is taken from abook called

The booklet I have is taken from a book called Early New Zealand Families "Matson of St. Albans" .  It basically tells a story of Henry Matson leaving his mother around Xmas for Chatham, Gravesend and Woolwich and his travel on the Ship George 111 to Tasmania and his adventures and marriage etc. then onto NZ.  The setting up of his Bloodstock and Farming business with a Mr. C.O. Torlesse and so on.  I have been there and met some of his descendants (trying to trace my roots) to no avail.  Some of his descendants have a small boutique Brewery in Christchurch.
Regards Ken  Matson
