US Lookup Requests / Re: Edith Jansen
« on: Friday 29 July 11 15:34 BST (UK)  »
After a great deal of research, frustration and miles, I can now inform everyone, particularly Erato, that Edith May Jansen has finally been traced.  You may recall that she was born Edith May Grosart, in Liverpool.  She then married Joseph Jansen Jr. in Liverpool and then went to America in 1920.  In that year she applied for a passport to return to the UK but I had been unable to track her after this.  To cut a very long story short, on 27th July, 2011, a lady in Australia found her record.

Edith May Jansen married a Joseph D Swancy on 8th May 1927, in Charlton, Georgia.  They remained married until she died in November 1972.  Her husband died in May 1978.  I do not think that there were any children from that marriage.

Whoopeeday!!!

To aghadowey,  I am most impressed by all of the quick and helpful replies with support for my project.  Regarding the marriage I am aware of the full details and your source has mispelt the name:- it is GROSART.  Nonetheless it does tell me that there is no shortage of goodwill and I can only repeat my gratitude to you all.

To Erato:-  I am amazed at all of the contacts that you have supplied me with.  They will keep me out of mischief for quite a while.  Thanks to you and everyone else, worldwide, who have shown such interest.  I can certainly do some 'name dropping' now.

Thank you for the input.  Yes, I have the reply that you mentioned and it has prompted me to ask further, particularly about the newspaper article.

United States of America / Mrs. Edith May Jansen.

I live in Oxford, UK and am researching my ancestry.  I have completed most of it on my mothers side, in the name of Grosart, as far back as 1735.  One great gap is missing.  This relates to my mother's sister, Edith May GROSART.  She was one of eleven children born to my grandparents.  They were all born in Liverpool in the 1800/1900's.  Edith May was born in 1899.  In 1919 she married Joseph Jansen Jr. a US Navy Ensign.  In August 1919, whilst aged 20, she sailed alone from Brest, in Brittany, France, (how she got there from Liverpool is unknown to me), to New York on the SS Cap Finnister.  From there she went to reside with her husband at 35 Wade Avenue, South Kirkwood, Atlanta, Georgia.  In September 1920 she applied for and was granted a US Passport to travel to the UK from New York for a period of 6 months to visit her family. This is the last official knowledge that I have.  My questions relate to whatever happened to her after that.  I have traveled far and wide in the UK and made many in depth inquiries and have been ably assisted by many people over here.  Now I wish to spread my search to America.  I have written to the Atlanta Genealogical Society and also to the address in Wade Avenue, but, to date, have not had any response.  A lady on this site says that the Google News Archive website says that an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, dated Sept. 18, 1919, quotes "Ensign Joseph Jansen Jr. who is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs Joseph Jansen, leaves shortly for Bayonne N.Y ( I understand that Bayonne is in fact in New Jersey not N.Y) where he will go into business. He was married to....." Here the quotation infuriatingly stops.  I have tried to contact the Atlanta JC but again to date I have not received any response.  Can anyone assist me with this article and/or any news related information regarding my Aunty Eedie, please?  Thank you for reading this message.

Hello again.  The second wife bit doesn't surprise me in the slightest.  Reading between the lines ( a dangerous practice perhaps but par for the course for her) it seems that the research will take me back to Liverpool.  As I mentioned before a PM could be useful.

Edith May GROSART, my Aunty, was born in Liverpool, UK in 1899. In 1919 she married an Amercan citizen, Joseph JANSEN Jr., in Liverpool, and automatically became an American citizen.  In August 1919 she sailed alone from the port of Brest, in Brittany, to New York on the SS Cap Finnister.  She then joined her husband and resided with him at his family home of 35 Wade Avenue, South Kirkwood, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.  In September 1920 she applied for an American passport to enable her to return to the UK to visit her family.  This is the last trace of her that I can find.  She is recorded on the passport application form as Edith JANSEN Jr.

My reason for this request is to finalise my family research into the GROSART family line.  Edith was one of 11 children born to my grandparents and I have managed to trace my ancestry in the GROSART line back as far as 1735.

I thank you.
