Wales / Re: Glass Industry in Wales?

Hi

The glassworks in Cardiff was in the area around what is now Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay and was situated, I think, on the bank of the canal which ran to the east of the Taff.  The works themselves were owned by Guest & Co (John Josiah Guest) and the land they were situated on was leased from the Bute Estate.  Around the time the construction began on the docks in Cardiff, Bute apparently wanted to buy Guest out of the lease so he could use the land but, so the story goes, there had been some sort of falling out between the two, so Guest carried on running the glassworks even though they weren't thought to be particularly profitable.  He died in 1852 and the lease either reverted to Bute or was sold back to him and he went on to build Mount Stuart Square.  I have seen a couple of early postcards which show the cones of the glassworks.

Hope this is of some use to you.

Hi Bruce

Attached is the first page of the Bickham list - second page to follow.  Hope it's legible and that you find it useful!

Hi Bruce

I mentioned this to Hewy - another poster - but I have a list I was given about 20 years ago which has a list of Bickhams from the Parish and Census Records Staplegrove for mainly the late 1800s.  If you're interested in it I could post it to you - it's only a couple of pages long.

All the best

Hi Bruce

I think you're right, it doesn't look as if we're from the same tree!  My Bickhams were in Somerset back in the 1700s and I haven't yet come across any who were in Herefordshire...

All the best

Hi Sharon

You've probably come across this by now but there is a 2009 book called The Women's Suffrage Movement in Wales, 1866-1928 by Ryland Wallace which might be useful.

Also, I'm doing some research about the women from the South Wales valleys who took part in the 1934 Hunger March and wondered if your great-aunt might have had any involvement in this?

Best wishes

Hi Bruce

I have Bonds and Bickhams living at 3 Tanyard Cottages in the 1891 Census.  I wondered if we were connected........?!
