Hi HMac, Thankyou for this information. I’m thrilled to know that there’s a photo of Matthew as I only have a small one that was taken by a street photographer, probably around 1931. I don’t have his discharge book, so perhaps when we’re allowed to travel again, I’ll take a trip to Kew. I would be very grateful for the name of the file when you have time - there’s certainly no rush!
Thanks again for your interest.

Hi Graham, Thank you for your reply. It's certainly an interesting story! I have located him on the Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878 - 1960. The survivors were brought home from Casablanca aboard the SS Arundel Castle.
My Grandfather is listed as a Barman which would be correct as that was his occupation with the Anchor Line before and after the war. He actually died in 1950 on board the Cilicia while it was docked in Aden. I have never discovered whether he was repatriated as his record of death doesn't state this. I'm assuming he was. Unfortunately, he and my grandmother were divorced and all contact with his side of the family was lost.
Thank you again for your interest.

World War Two / Convoy Faith 1943

Hi, hope you are all well.
I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, so apologies if not. I was going through my notes regarding my grandfather, Matthew Kerr Ramsay. It would seem that he was a survivor on board the SS California when it was hit by a German aircraft on 11th July 1943. The ship was part of "Convoy Faith" as it was taking nuns and priests to Sierra Leonne. I have seen a list of survivors on line but I can't for the life of me remember where. I just want to double check all the information before I attach the details to my grandfather's profile on my family tree. Would anyone be able to suggest where I saw this list please? I've tried looking everywhere I can think of, to no avail.
I would be so grateful for any thoughts.
Many thanks,
Meggy

Hi Jac66,

It is confusing trying to follow the various Stanners! My limited understanding is that possibly one set of Stanners travelled with Brigham Young, of the Mormon Church and the name was changed to Stanhouse because of accent difficulties! I'm guessing you possibly already know this.
They ended up in DuQuoin?  As I say, my knowledge of this part of the family is limited. Gow67 is more knowledgable than me I think.  Are you on Ancestry at all? There are a few trees on there with Stanners branches, (including mine ) . It might be worth a look.

Hi, sorry I haven’t replied sooner. Unfortunately I can’t get the Roll of Honour book just at the moment, so thanks Alan for supplying the information.
Alan I wonder if you could tell me where I can get hold of a copy of Without Fear? I live in Yorkshire and have tried Waterstones but they couldn’t help. I have Stanners relatives on the memorial.
Many Thanks

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Occupation of tambourer in Bo'ness
« on: Tuesday 24 September 19 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My Great x 2 grandmother's occupation on the 1851 census in Bo'ness was a Tambourer. I have since found out that this was something to do with lace making. Quite a few of the other women on the census form are listed as this, so I wondered if anyone knew if there was a factory or employer of some sort in the area?
Many Thanks.
