The Common Room / cant do this for a while
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 19:35 BST (UK)  »
a long time ago i started my family research, i found rootschat and my research became so much more fun. other people were interested in this too! i had people to help me and more importantly people who i could share the frustrations with. then i became pregnant and my world fell apart for a lot of reasons. i disappeared from rootschat and couldn't face the idea of ever doing family research again. i didn't thank anyone here or tell anyone where i was going or why. in fact even now I'm back doing this i still haven't told many people what happened in my life despite a lot of fellow rootschatters almost becoming daily electronic penpals.

anyway on Monday 21st March at 6.20am my grandmother passed away. i was with her along with my sister and my mum. it was one of the hardest things i have ever lived through. my granmother had lung cancer and had decided very early on she wanted no intervention or fussing when the time came. we respected her wishes and it was very peaceful and calm, but so so traumatic for us. since then i have struggled with normal functioning, most days i get through it because of my children and husband. people tell me it will get easier and i have no doubt it might. if not easier to accept at least easier to live with.

this time i didn't want to just leave and not say thank you to everyone who has helped me. there are so many of you who have helped me with my research but also with some more personal problems. i will come back and do family research one day I'm sure. i just don't think i can face it now. not for a long while i would think. i cant imagine logging into any of my trees and filling in those devastating details.

thank you to everyone who has helped me encouraged me or even just laughed with me at my daft ways.

I would guess at cattle too. I have many ancestors in killashee longford who split land between themselves and then proceeded to fall out with each other over wandering cattle. Many of my lot in court being fine over 'did let one goat/cow wander into property of....'

I found Steve's post funny  ;D  ;D

It does bring me nicely though onto what exactly I can tell or should tell this person. He is by no means famous but known within his field quite well and has appeared in some famous circles. What I tell him wouldn't ruin his career or anything but its not the greatest story I have to tell.

Hello I don't know you and you might think I'm a weirdo but we're related. Our great great grandfather was rather famous, for thriving all the jewllers in the Knightsbridge London area. Your own great grandfather was also well known for being a thug and a thief., along with his sister my great grandmother who was given to complete meltdowns and hissy fits and at one time stole a load of ration boks and sold them on, leaving her kids hungry?

Not entirely sure he's going to want to hear all I have to say but unfortunately none of what I know of out shared ancestry is any good.

i hadnt really thought of it like this. i was so caught up in "Blimey hes famous" that i hadnt really stopped to think that actually hes just human too. daft teenage moment there i guess  ::) ;D

sadly there is no one left to answer any questions. well actually there might be but if there is i cant find them seeing as a few of the gentleman dissappered in the 1950's. they most likely have new lives with new children somehwere but i dont think i will ever find them.

hopefully this person will get back to me.

The Common Room / reasonably well known relative.

i decided that the only way i was going to find out the mysteries surrounding some of my ancestors was to start with what i knew and work from there. i knew who my great nanny was and i knew all of her siblings. i also knew most of her siblings spouses. there are lots of mysteries like where did so and so go? why did they change their name? how did they get there etc. my idea was to trace each sibling and follow the line down to each living descendant and then maybe contact them saying "hello we have a shared great great grandfather, do you know anything about...."

the thing is now i have come across as living person who is reasonably well known. ie his name does appear in the papers from time to time and he is definitely well known within his own circle. i didnt realise who he was at first. i found him on fb and sent him a message hoping he would see it and get back to me. i then went away and had a look online for any info about this person (nosy i guess) as soon as i googled his name loads came up about his achievements and his career, plus some newspaper stories about him.

i now feel like a complete wally because when i messaged him i didnt realise this and i just prattled on and on about who i was and who our shared ancestor was and what info i would love to have if he knew it. i didnt for one minute think he was possibly who he is. now i dont know whether to message him again telling him im not some freak who randomly messages people. i dont want him to think im a stalker or anything haha.

so what should i do?

I can't seem to find him on the 39 register I know where the in-laws were and have found them with some locked people. He isn't there though. I have looked under a number of names and can't seem to find him although I have found him in the London electrol registers on ancestry. He is loving with his father Charles Eugene in Southwark in 1921.
His alias come with his crimes I would think. A number of thefts and larcency charges. In fact running from the eldest sibling Winifred Denigan and her husband Charles, all the way down to the youngest my great nanny they all had alias and crimes to add to them.

sorry i should have been a bit more detailed. a name would have helped i guess haha.
charles walter francis child. went by the name charley francis child, john childs, charles walter child and also used francis as his last name too!

born 1898 in newington surrey married winifred dennigan in 1923. she died in 1926 after the birth of their son charles. he was known as nipper and as far as i know was 'adopted' by the denigans.

rosie on the previous thread about his death found some court cases and i thinmif i remember on 2 he is a sailor. thats all it says. then i found a WW! medal and awards rolls record for a charles walter francis child. as far as i know he was the only one with this name in full born around the right time frame so i guessed this was him. i need to do a little more research before i can say that is him.

he was known to live in mitcham surrey, bournemouth possibly and pretty much anywhere around the surrey/london area.
