England / Re: Female Christian name.
« on: Friday 30 June 23 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all for your thoughts.

It was indeed the lady from Shropshire, and I was hoping that someone had met the name before and could give me the correct spelling and pronunciation.

England / Female Christian name.
« on: Monday 26 June 23 18:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a female ancestor born in 1784 with a Christian name written in parish registers variously as: Savill, Scivel, Seevil, Seville and Seivilla. Does anyone know of a female name from this period that fits any of these as I'm puzzled?
Thank you.

Other Countries / Death in Africa
« on: Wednesday 12 January 22 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of mine, John Tait Macpherson, died in Africa probably in the 1920s. He was the local agent for the Blue Funnel Shipping Line in Warri, Nigeria.
Following his death, his belongings were shipped to his family in Liverpool but his body stayed in Warri.
I would like to know if he has a marked grave in Warri, and would appreciate any advice on how I should go about finding out.
Unfortunately, another John Macpherson was Governor of Nigeria and Google seems to concentrate on him.
Thank you,  Al

World War Two / W G Felgate. Royal Marines.
« on: Saturday 01 January 22 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently received the WW2 service record of my father-in-law William George Felgate for his period of service from Sept 1942 until his demob in June 1946.
He was in the Royal Marines, service number X114928. Unfortunately it gives very little detail of what he did and where, just a list of shore bases where he trained in landing craft operation. His medal card, however, says that he was in 504 Flotilla and I have since found that they took the 5th US ranger battalion to Omaha beach on D-Day. Is it likely that he went ashore or just put the boat in reverse and went back to fetch more? It also mentions that he was in 904 LCS(M) from August 1944 to September 1945. Also during this period he was said to be at either COPRA or 905 Flotilla. We know that he went to Burma, or that area, as he qualified for the Burma Star medal but there is no mention of this and I’m not sure where to look.
I would appreciate help from anyone more versed in these matters than I.

Scotland / Re: Bankruptcy of J McPherson & Son

My thanks yet again Elwyn for your help. I have taken out a subscription and found the report. A bit of poor book-keeping involved it seems, or no book-keeping at all!

Very many thanks for this Elwyn, it is exactly what I was looking for. Would you mind telling me how you gained access to this report?
This insolvency was the cause of my ancestors to leave Scotland, and the detail would be of great family interest.

Thank you Forfarian for your response and for your suggestion of the National Records of Scotland as a possible source of information. I've had a look at their website and, although they may hold what I'm after, finding it could be quite a challenge.

Scotland / Bankruptcy of J McPherson & Son
« on: Wednesday 05 June 19 12:16 BST (UK)  »
In December 1872, James McPherson and his son John McPherson, partners in the shipbuilding company James McPherson and Son, of Perth, had their estates sequestered. This was reported in the Edinburgh Gazette of the time.
The trustee appointed was Alexander Tosh, an Accountant of Dundee, and an examination of these two was to have taken place in the Sheriff Court House, Perth, on 21st December 1872. The creditors were then invited to meet in the Solicitor’s Library, County Buildings, Perth, on 30th December 1872, presumably to discuss the outcome of the earlier meeting.
My question is, is it likely that any records still exist of either of these meetings and where could they be accessed as I would very much like to learn the details of this bankruptcy?

Perthshire / Re: What become of wife , Anne Fenton married at Perth on 20/11/1867.
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 16:02 GMT (UK)  »
My thanks to all who replied and for your helpful suggestions.
I agree, CaroleW, that it was very strange for John to take the children if Ann were still alive - it has puzzled me for years - and I too considered post-natal depression.
I have John's 1878 marriage certificate to Agnes Carbis under the name John Laing and, twelve months later, the birth certificate of their first born under the name John Laing Macpherson. It has to have been a bigamous marriage and, it seems, he got away with it.
The snippet by ecksdochter indicates that John and Ann had marriage problems after the birth of Georgina, and that Ann was using her maiden name.
Fenton, the son of John and Ann, did quite well in life, becoming the foreign editor of the Daily Mail.
Once again, mant thanks.
