Thanks  Maddys52.   Margaret Crawford (the daughter-in-law) was Margaret Potts.  She and hubby James, who must been on ship on census night, and the two wee ones went to Adelaide.  Still dont know when but Margaret died there, a widow, in 1936.  Thanks for finding the 1891 address.  Ill look up shipping arrivals post 1891.  much appreciated.   Jo

Dear Rootschatters.  getting back to my family after years of neglect and in my golden years its like taking baby steps again.  Have fleshed many bones from before their arrival in Oz in 1910s (grandfather David Bennett Crawford in Newcastle NSW)  and 1920s  (great uncle James and wife Margaret Potts in Adelaide) and would like some British Census lookups please.  1901 Census  Crawford/Wymer  of West Ham  Leyton(stone)    and Bennett  of same area.  1911 Census  Crawford/Potts  of West Ham   Leytonstone..   Hopefully can place them before their long voyages.  I did have contact with "jackhammer" back in 2010  which led me to some Crawford burials at Cheltenham  cemetery  Adelaide.  Although now living in New Zealand I have many rellies  in Oz and try to visit Adelaide yearly.  Thanks for listening.       Jo

Renfrewshire / Re: Captain James Crawford born abt 1835

hello there.  Capt. James Crawfords son, also James, went to Adelaide after marrying Margaret Potts.  Did family settle there?  Also believe James and Margarets son David Rainey settled there. Have info that latter served on ships "Kathlamba" and "Kandahara".  An Archibald McNair Crawford disembarked at Brisbane 1924 on way to Adelaide.  Am connected through younger James' brother David Rennie whose son went to New South Wales in 1910.  Just fleshing out my sea-faring family. hope you can help.   Jo

Kilkenny / researching Henry Donkin and his wife Bridget Adelias
« on: Friday 07 September 18 10:26 BST (UK)  »
I am new to this message board but have been researching Henry Donkin and his wife Bridget Adelias descendants for a friend who is their great granddaughter. She is descended from Henry’s eldest child, Mary Ann. If it is possible to make direct contact with me through the moderator, I would be pleased to hear from Allie “Uregirl”, or any other descendants of Henry and Bridget Adelia.
Regards - Jay

Thanks for your reply, Jeuel.  Yes, I will contact local paper  --- just trying to work on too many fronts at once, and not seeing the obvious!

Hello jackhammer,

Just picking up on Captain James Crawford, b.Greenock 1835 and died Calcutta 17.2.1867.

He was my maternal gt gt grandfather and was a sea captain.  Many of the Crawford men were involved in shipping until one line went to London.  When Captain Crawford died, his widow Margaret (nee Ogilvie) remarried, to Francis William Wymer and the family moved to London and then my line went to Oz.

Family is fairly well documented.  You have given some great info to my sister, Virginia, on Archibald McNair Crawford, one of Capt. Crawford's grandsons and a gt. uncle to Virginia and me.

You may have been researching Crawford history for someone else.  They can certainly contact me if wished.  We have not gone further back than Capt. Crawford's father, James and his wife, Janet Wright.

Good wishes,
Jo

London and Middlesex / Re: jacobs family of West Ham 1920's

Hello and thanks for replies from Valda, CroxleyGreen and Jeuel,

Have BMD certs for this family, but had not checked the 1901 Census. The extended family has long wanted to know what happened to the wee lad (William Charles Crawford), orphaned at 2 yo.  He had been put in the "too hard" basket while other family research was underway, and now it's time to highlight him.

I'll follow up on school records once I find where he was brought up.

Thanks again,
Jo
