Really grateful for all your help: we are checking out that evidence, which does seem to very much fit.
When we do will share the anecdotal parts and background of that family story, looks quite a tale...
Much appreciated, big thanks Galium, avm228, Rosie99, heywood and all

Maria Turner born 1881 in Deeping St Nicholas, Lincolnshire, census 1891, then disappears, assume name change but not traced yet.
Family story that Sophia took a baby plus one older sister when she left, which we believe was prior to May 1898, but we all know how family stories vary down the generations...

Intriguing: we do not have any info about the rumoured baby, just family story, so now following that possible lead.. thanks!

Thanks all keen investigators so far!
We have been searching for years and have the Turner family in Tongue End until 1898 as we have child and local records. We have family 1901 and 1911, but no Sophia or Maria. The story passed down generations is that Sophia left during 1898.
But the rest is a mystery, so posting here in hope someone, maybe from her new family if the lore is true, or from an area to which she may have moved (Lincolnshire - Northants - Leicester - Nottingham is best guess) might respond. We suspect it was an emotional rather than logical event, and that she may have not wanted to be found We have checked out all likely Sophias and Marias 1901-1911; searched her offsprings' moves in case she followed; searched news sources and for any evidence of crime or misfortune; but beyond a final check when 1921 is available we are stuck...
Thanks again all for your interest.

Family History Beginners Board / solve a mystery?

Can anyone help us to solve a family mystery?
We are trying to find out what happened to SOPHIA TURNER, a mother of twelve, who disappeared suddenly from her Lincolnshire home around 1898.
Family lore suggests she was spotted in Nottingham some years later, maybe using a new name.
She was born Sophia Essex in Market Harborough in 1858 and may have taken a baby and 17 year old daughter Maria with her.
We have exhausted standard online sources searching on a range of criteria, places and dates, but ideas, leads, tips or contacts would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance.
