Yes his parents were
Ellen Smith (Smith from her second husband)
Ellen Partridge  (Partridge her first husband died, this was Williams father)
William through census was registered as Smith, but when he was 15 he is shown as Partridge and stepson)
He married as a Smith and all the children took the name Smith.

Thanks

SHIRLEY SWEETLAND

I will look into the death in 1954
Thanks

Needle in 2 haystacks

My gggfather was born
Joseph William Partridge in Lambeth in 1883, his father died and his mother returned to Northampton and remarried a Smith and Joseph took on this name.

He married as Joseph William Smith a Sophia Willis in Long buckby Northants, sadly his wife died in 1914.
Family talk says he joined the Army and returned to Long Bucky after the war to check the children were ok (they were with Aunts) he then was said to have moved away possibly Rugby.

I would love to solve this one after 4 decades---totally lost
Steve
