Family History Beginners Board / London address
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 12:22 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandfather Henry Wilkins, of Henley-on-Thames, moved to London around 1880 to work as a railway porter. His first address, according to the 1881 census, was at 66, Harwood Road, but I can't find that on the map or on any lists of previous street names. He later lived in Maldon Road and Vorley Road, and those I can trace, but not Harwood Street.

Could you help me with this please? Thanks, Maurice Wilkins.

I've used this software for many years and though it looks rather dated I find that it does everything that I need at the moment. If I want to upgrade I can convert data to GEDCOM files and migrate to a more modern system, but for the moment I'm staying put.

However, I've discovered that I need to move a whole section of my tree en bloc to a different ancestor. I have done this before but now I have to do it again I cannot remember how I did it! Is anyone out there able to help me - I want to make absolutely sure that I don't use any data, though I have of course backed up the files elsewhere.

I'd be most grateful for any help.

Many thanks,

Maurice.

Hi Dixie

Back in 2006 you mentioned seeing a house in Hampton Wick with 'Gravel Pit Hill' above the door. I've just discovered that my great-grandfather Richard Shortland lived at 1, Gravel Pit Hill, according to the 1911 census. He owned a draper's shop in Surbiton at the time.

Did you ever find out any more?

Regards,

Maurice.

Very interested to find this as I've discovered today that my Great Aunt Emily was born at Dartmouth Hill in 1892 and wondered where and what it was!

Thank you!

Ah! Many thanks!
Please excuse my ignorance, but what does PCC stand for in this context?

Maurice.
Prerogative Court of Canterbury - the highest tier of the church probate courts.

Oxfordshire / Henley local history

Is there anyone out there who has a good knowledge of Henley local history and geography? My grandfather, Frank Wilkins, who owned H.Wilkins and Sons, lived all of his 97-odd years in the town and how I wish I'd asked him more while I had the chance!   :(

Maurice.

I too have spent about 30 minutes trying to work how how to send a personal message! There's always an answer from somebody if only you ask the question! Thank you everyone!
