Essex / Lexden - locating a house
« on: Wednesday 19 October 05 01:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

On the 1881 Census Alfred Clarke and family are shown living at 56 Lexden Street, Lexden.

I am trying to identify where this house was and if it is still there.   Unfortunately, Lexden Street is now Lexden Road and I think it has been renumbered at some point.

Any information most appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Hi John,

Just realised that I made a mistake.   The census was actually for 1861, not 1901 (apologies to all).

The only other street mentioned on the page is Vineyard Street, which comes first.   I would assume that the mystery square was very close to Vineyard Street (or even perhaps situated off it).   There are no businesses mentioned and no other clues that I can discern.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look.

Thanks for looking Jane - Weighbridge is certainly a possibility.

I made a small error in the original post - it's actually the 1861 Census, not the 1901.

Essex / Colchester - Can anyone decipher this ??
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 14:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to decipher an old street name from the 1901 Census in Colchester, but I can't come up with anything that matches any street name that I've ever heard of.  Highbridge, Wightbridge ??   I'm stuck!

The street appears on the Census form after Vineyard Street in the parish of St. Botolphs - if that's any help!    I guess it's under a carpark or shopping centre now.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Will of G.H. Errington of Lexden (d 1883)
« on: Monday 18 April 05 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find details of a bequest made to my g-g-g-grandfather, Edward Clarke (b Lexden 1808), in the will of G.H. Errington of Lexden Park on his death in 1883.

All I know is that he was left a house, presumably in Lexden village.

If anyone has a copy of, or access to, Mr. Errington's will I would be most grateful if they could enlighten me on which house it was.

Thanks

Tony

No need for apologies - you've confirmed to me that the site of the murco garage is the right piece of land.   So, thanks for that Al.

It would great to see some photos - a lady biker with a camera would be quite useful.

Now I know that the land is the right bit of land, I am left with a whole new set of questions.   This genealogy is such fun!

I have a photo of the site, taken recently, which shows the edge of the house on Heath Road that adjoins the Murco site.   Unfortunately, the photo doesn't show anything other than the wall and roof - so I have no way of guaging the age of the property.   By my reckoning, if the murco site was my g-grandfather's orchard then his house (from my Mum's recollection) would have been where there is currently a house (i.e. facing onto Heath Road).   Is this a relative new house built on the land or is it the house my g-grandfather lived in (i.e. my grandfather's childhood home).       So many questions!   How's your memory ??

Thanks again Al - you're being a great help.

Tony

Well, obviously nobody can see <that> far - I just thought you were psychic or something!!!!  Sorry, I just didn't think.   I've pasted the link below:

http://www.nicholaspercival.co.uk/Residential/Res%20for%20Sale/All%20Sale%20Files/R2463.htm

I reckon the cottages are the ones you mention.  No half-timber, but plenty of render.

From my reckoning the Isoms have probably lived on all those streets at some time!   On one of the old census records for Church Lane I went down the list and practically every name was a relative - several Isoms, Clarkes etc. all living next to each other.

Can't believe you've got a Tweed in the family!  Glad you've found it - now all we need to know is which bit of land my lot sold your lot lol
