Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA - What's the point?
« on: Thursday 15 October 20 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my dna result saved me from making a huge mistake about who my grandfather was. The name O'Neill is so common in Ireland, plus a Smith wife that I had him down as the son of the wrong John O'Neill and Eliza Smith. Fortunately close cousins had had a dna test and I was put onto the correct  family. As I was told 'dna does not lie'. In time closer members of your family will have dna tests and the results will be much closer than 4th cousin, which is really distant. Good luck

Hi, what do others think the occupation of James Smith is? I thought it was 'slater', but other S's on the document don't seem similar.
many thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Moons of Hollowforth
« on: Friday 03 August 18 08:09 BST (UK)  »
JASD lots of good info in your post, and glad to see my own research confirmed as correct. Regarding Henry Moone b1527, I have him as a tenant of Moon's Farm, Hollowforth, near the water mill on Barton Brook. He was my 12th great g/father. Another Moon built Moon's Mill. Regarding Mathias Moone b1775 m Alice Plumb these are cousins of mine. He and family all went to USA and the children/descendants are in Utah. I believe they converted to Mormans through the agency of visiting preachers. A very interesting site is adventurersinfamilyhistory.blogspot, and I'm still after that Moon book!

Many thanks for your input. Unfortunately I cannot get to any library as I live in Greece. (No, they don't actually have public libraries here - no money). I was hoping I could locate a 2nd hand copy. Had a look on ebay but nothing there.

all the best

Does anyone know if the above authors's book are still in print, and if so, where to buy. In particular I am interested in 'The Moons of Amounderness', and I think he also wrote a history of Kirkham. (Moon is a surname here, it's not a book about lunar activity!

many thanks

Lancashire / marriage by license
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 13:13 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for reasons why a couple would choose to marry by license. The most obvious one could be they were in a hurry! But if no offspring emerged prematurely, what else could they be hurrying for? Is it likely that one or the other of the couple anticipated family objections, and if banns were read on 3 occasions I guess such objections might become known or even acted upon. The couple in question married in Lancashire. As far as I know the bride was over 21, don't know about the groom.
If either was requiring parental consent then I think the license would be refused anyway?
Any thoughts on this please.
