I started this thread when researching for a friend. I haven’t kept anything from that time to be able to help - paper copies and the bed on went to her and I am no longer in touch with her.

Thanks for you help and comments everyone - they have helped me to understand the records I was looking at.

The Common Room / Re: Lunacy Patients Admission Registers - Discharge conditions
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Just found info from the New Lunacy Act 1845 -

Recovered
Relieved = recovered from acute illness and can return home or to another hospital
Not improved - I don't understand this one - why would they be discharged?

I'm looking at the Lunacy Patients Admission Registers and am not sure about the categories for discharge from asylum. I am clear with recovered and death but what are the other two? can anyone help?

Many thanks

Just adding another twist to this - I have now found her brother in Calderstones in 1939! He died there in 1942 and is buried in the Hospital Cemetery.

Just to conclude Winfred's story and the thread - her death certificate arrived today and she died at Brockhall rather than Calderstones but a similar institution.

Personally I wouldn't presume anything until you receive the death certificate and can see what information is on it.  It will have place and cause of death plus who the informant of the death was.
Agree I would never presume until the certificate arrives (it's ordered).

I was really asking if anyone knows which district Calderstones deaths were recorded in?

Thank you for reviving this thread and giving me the nudge I needed to look Winifred up again.

In 1939 she was at her family home in Barrow in Furness and is listed as incapacitated.

I hadn't ordered her death certificate (but have now). I hadn't thought to look up the registration on Lanc BMD - that shows her death in Billington. Would I be correct in presuming she could therefore have been at Calderstones?

In a strange coincidence I watched a YouTube video a week or two back about Calderstones Cemetery and found it fascinating! My lady was buried back at Barrow though.
