Hi Pam,

I don't know of Edward's brothers and sisters, but the dates looks right. No wonder I was having so any problems finding them - wish he'd use the right name.  :)

Thanks for that!

Regards,
Karen

Durham Lookup Requests / Death between 1861-1871 Houghton
« on: Saturday 25 February 06 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys,

I am trying to find the death of Elizabeth Taylor (I know, common name right).

She is in the 1861 census with her husband Thomas and their grandson Thomas (also shown as nephew). On the 1871 census Thomas is a widower living as a boarder.

Elizabeth was born about 1787 in Gateshead (Thomas in 1781 - so give or take a few years for her).

They lived in Houghton-le-Spring and St Giles all their lives and Thomas died in 1872 in Knott, West Rainton - registration district houghton.

I'm in desperate need of finding her death so I can purchase the certificate and get her maiden name.

Thanks,
Kaz

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Need help please: census 1871/1861

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for that.

Did confuse me further  :)

... but it looks like a step in the right direction.

I'm going to search for a birth of William in Bridge North Shropshire and see if he comes up with the father Thomas.

I wish my family could have chosen some less common names  :'(

Thanks,
Karen

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Need help please: census 1871/1861
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 07:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have just found my first relatives in Shropshire. I have no idea about where anything is so i need some help.

I am trying to find William Thompson born about 1855. The census details I have found show him as being born in Shropshire Wolson / Wolsop.

His father is Thomas Thompson.

Common names I know.

At the time of his marriage in 1879 he was living in a place called Stub house - marriage was in Kirby York.

His fathers occupation on the marraige certificate is of a labourer.

William's age is not on the certificate it just says both of full age.

William's occupation was as an agricultural labourer.

After he married he lived in Guisborough Yorkshire then moved to Durham.

I am trying to find out who his mother is and I'm finding their are too many William's in the birth index's especially when I can't find anywhere called Wolson / Wolsop..

Regards,

Wow, they had that street monopolised didn't they!

That's interesting, the adoption. In the 1881 census there was no sign of a wife either, I'm guessing he either never married or she passed away.

I don't know how adoption worked those days. I wonder if Alfred Rough was possibly a child or grandchild of a sister or niece. Now that is a mystery that has me curious!

Thank you for all your help.

It'll keep me busy for a while!

Thanks Pauline,

This looks right.

The 1881 census details for Joseph Dawson senior and Junior have them living at 6 Union Place Gateshead.

Are you able to check for me and see if Joseph senior was still there then please. He was a horse dealer and he would be aged approx 60 in 1891 born in Lumley.

I know Joseph junior was married by then.
