I will have a look though at what I can find out about Thomas - George’s “brother” and I’ll let you know if I come across anything  :)

Apologies for my mistake - Thomas Hillier,George's putative brother, was baptised in Bishops Cannings! I noticed that George called one of his sons Thomas too.

Thank you so much for all your time and information you have found for me. It is confusing though and not knowing anything definate I don’t want to follow the wrong family  ::)
Yes, George did name his youngest son Thomas and Thomas is my great great grandad.
I am so grateful for what you have looked up though as I didn’t know about George having a brother though if this is the right family x   X

Good Morning
Yes I've been thinking about it over night and I'm not happy either.
I went back and looked for a James Pearce the witness.
James 25.10.1802 s of John and Mary Pearce seems to be the man.
He died 2.4.1835 age 32
Brother Steven bapt 16.8.1807-7.9.1807
Father John 1767- 12.8.1830

John widower married 16 Aug 1801 Stanton St Bernard Mary Thorngate spinster
So Ann could be the daughter from his previous marriage and that gives us two choices.

Ann d of John and Betty 23 Dec 1798 Southbroom
Sister Sarah 23.3.1794
Married ? Southbroom Elizabeth Stevens 6.2.1786
John Pearce bapt 24.4.1765 s of James Phillips and Ann his wife sojourner at Southbroom.
That's just weird but that's what it says.
Possible Burial for  John 1764-25.9.1837

Ann age 4 d of John and Mary at Urchfont 29.6.1797
Sister Mary  4.2.1791
Possible burial for John 22.12.1813 age 57 but that would make him born 1757 so I don't think he's the one whose father of Ann and Mary.

See what you think I'm struggling but maybe it might spark some ideas with you.

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Thank you so much for your time in looking all this info up for me.

I think I’m going to have to go into each person and take my time trying to work things out, it’s quite mind boggling when you see all the names and dates in front of you especially when names are the same as someone else in the same parish.

I will get back to you to let you know if I think I’ve found the right family .

Thanks again

Wendy

Hi Trish thank you for looking that up for me.

I think quite a few ancestors in the 17th & 18th century use to bend the truth   ::) especially when it came to marrying someone - I watched a programme a few weeks ago and they were saying they use to lie about their age if they were too young to marry & say they were single if the church frowned upon divorcee’s. Why they didn’t own up to being widowed I don’t know.

The 1836 entry is my George and the boys, I have their birth and death certs. They did end up in the workhouse. George died and the boys were left there.

Thank you so much for your reply.
I’ll have a look at this family tomorrow- I think the father was James though as this is what is on Ann’s marriage to George, Ill keep you posted though if I uncover anything.

Thank you

Hi, thank you for that.
I have seen these entries a few times but because it says Enford I have just left it. When George and Ann got married I didn’t know where they lived so I suppose these could be a possibility.
I have looked  at the distance between Enford and Wilcot (where George came from) and Enford & Stanton St. Bernard where Ann came from.
On foot it’s a couple of hrs.
I just don’t want to assume these are the correct children in case their not but, it would be brilliant if they were so I’m unsure what to do really in terms of trying to eliminating them.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Ann Pearce birth place help please...
« on: Thursday 03 May 18 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please. I’m trying to find where Ann Pearce b. approx 1796 was born. All I have on this lady  is she married George Hillier in 1824 at Stanton St Bernard, Wilts.
There was a James Pearce ( maybe her father) on the marriage entry as witness. I would like to find if George and Ann had any children between 1824 & 1829 as 1829 was when Ann died. I thought if they had children then maybe possibly they went to live with her parents because George remarried in 1836 and had two boys with Kezia Chandler, no mention of any other children.
That’s why I’m trying to find where Ann  was born so I can find out her mother’s name too and hopefully look at the 1841 census to see if I can find any children with the Pearce family.
All I can find is an Ann Pearce born in Buckinghamshire with father James and an Ann born in Westminster, London with father James.

Thank you for that.

I did wonder if William had left or died that’s why Sarah was ‘baseborn’ and Mary was single.

Sorry I don’t know the areas but are Wilcot, Overton and West Stowell near each other or within each other if you know what I mean?

I really want to try and go back further on this family but with the information being so limited I’m really struggling. I’ve been trying for over 3 yrs to find Mary’s surname before marriage and also where she and William were born. It doesn’t help either with there being so many with the same names in the same area.  ::)
