Midlothian / Re: Helen Jack - please help solve parents puzzle?
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 15:55 BST (UK)  »
It's been a while since I looked at this. I have on my tree now the names given on the marriage certificate ie Thomas Jack and Euphemia Allan. I do have death dates for them both - Thomas 15.10.1858 and Euphemia 10.4.1860. Since Ellen remarried in September 1858, it was right enough that neither of her parents were listed as deceased at the time.

As Forfarian has said, I have come to realise that birth and marriage records are more reliable than death records!

Thanks - that's really interesting to hear about the different pronunciations.

Hello Lauren - I've only just seen your reply, didn't get a notification. It would be great to swap info if possible. Can you send me a PM with your email and we can get in touch. Particularly interested to know more about his death record which I've not had before.

Thank you all so much! I forgot that I had the full War Diary from the National Archives, having previously only printed out a small part of it. Ghyvelde is indeed mentioned on exactly those dates. I presume it may have been pronounced Gee - veld with a hard G so could easily have been misheard.

I will now go back through the diaries and match them up with what he wrote on his list.

I notice in the Battalion diaries the location is given as 'in the line' and talks about Nose Support, Nose Lane and Nasal Trench which I guess were the names given to the trenches. So when he said he went 'up the line', he must have been in the trenches.

I wonder if anyone can help with figuring out what place name this is? It's in a diary my great uncle kept during WW1. There are very few entries but he did write a list of the places he went to when he first arrived in France. The word I am struggling to figure out is the one which begins with a D.

He has previously been at Bailleul, Steenwerck, Dunkirk then Nieuport But I can't think what this word is. Wherever it is, when he left on 11th July he was wounded the same day and went to hospital.

He was with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Scots at this time.

Would be grateful for any ideas.

Hello Pamela - Meg Cameron was my great aunt. Her sister Hannah was my gran. My dad always spoke fondly of his visits to Dunlop. We must be related somehow but will need to look at my family tree to work out how! If you make another couple of posts we'll be able to send a private message and exchange email addresses.

Portybelle. I believe we could be related then as Adam Lothian is also my 4x Great Grandfather on my dad's mums side.

Oh that's interesting. Perhaps we could compare info. Which of Adam's children are you related through?
