Australia / Re: Family of James Crombie Kilpatrick in South Australia

Hi Suevize
found this in SA Births Index of Registrations 1842-1906 SAGHS
KILPATRICK Martha (F) 7 Jan 1853 (at: not recorded) dist Adel par: James Crombie Kilpatrick & Mary O'Connor bk4 pg 113

District of Adelaide at this time covered a wide area.  It went as far north as Salisbury, south to Darlington, from the sea in the west to the hills in the east.   Districts of Yatala, Norwood, Hindmarsh & Port Adelaide were part of the Adelaide district at this time.  I can look at a copy which may contain an address of father, but can't do this until next week.

Have check the Deaths Indexes for 1842-1915 & 1916-1972 with no likely matches. The Marriages Index for 1842-1916 contain no female Kilpatricks at all, and only 3 males married during this time. No matches.

Hi JM, sorry about my sporadic messaging, have to ask my children for a turn on the laptop!!

His parents were John Brown Alden (1806-68) & Huldah Clapp (1808-99) from Ludlow, Hampden, Massachusetts.  Info from Google book "Families of Ancient Wethersfield", Connecticut Hy R Stiles & 1855 Massachusetts Census.  He was a descendant of John Alden of "Mayflower" fame.

thanks again

Yes the 14 May 1874 refers to "the one with red hair" which I took to mean that Mr Alden had red hair.  Our family story always had the red hair bit in it, though I doubt he was murdered in the Gold fields.  I suspect he did a "runner" from Strathalbyn, I doubt he would have changed his name to Samuel and kept the Alden.  His business in Strath was road making, fencing that sort of thing, not coach building.
 thanks Nat

Hi JM, thanks for your welcome.

I have not been able to find the exact newspaper article I referred to on Trove.  It was part of a series of articles on "Rattening" in Collingwood published during May 1874 in the Argus which involved Mr Alden.  When I discovered these articles several months ago there were several, but my search this time only yielded a couple. Where do they go? [not the first time this has happened]  I did find an article in The South Australian Register 23 May 1874 pg 6 which refer to Samuel Alden a small coach builder in Collingwood, so Mr Alden was Samuel Alden, so I don't think he's my Mr Alden.  Have since found Brainard Alden also referred to as Bernard.

Alden - Brainard Birdsey/Boothby
b 1839 Ludlow Hampden Mass US, arrived in SA after 1855, m 1861 Strathalbyn SA, has 5 children then disappears c1869.

The family story has him going to the gold diggings in Victoria with some local friends, where he was murdered for his fortune.  The inference being that the returning friends now had his gold.  His body was identified by his distinctive orange hair.  I have found no basis for this story, I think he took off, probably to Vic. I have found a Victorian newspaper article on a Mr Alden who had red hair.

Not sure how he arrived in Australia from US.

Any ideas Nat
