Ireland / James Murray born c.1816
« on: Monday 22 January 18 01:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I would love some information about James Murray, who was born in Ireland, c.1816.
James Murray married Margaret Gough.
James Murray and Margaret Gough had two sons who settled in Australia. They were:
Peter Patrick Murray (1842-1917)
James Murray (1845-1912)
Thank you.

Australia / George Bollom
« on: Monday 22 January 18 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I apologise if this query is being posted in the wrong area.
I am hoping to find some information about George Bollom, who was born c. 1836, in Australia, I believe. He may have died in Ballarat.
George Bollom married Julia Catterson in 1858. (Julia may have gone by the surname Berry, as I think she was previously married).
My grandmother always understood that George Bollom's family was from Spain and that the surname may have have originally been Bollomino (or something similar).
I believe that George Bollom was born in Australia, although I don't know when or where. I would love to find out the names of his parents so I can explore the possibly-Spanish connection.
Thank you.

England / Thomas Evans and Mary Thorne
« on: Monday 22 January 18 01:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am hopeful that someone may be able to help with the ancestry of Thomas Evans (born 1804; died 1856) and his wife, Mary Thorne (born 1805; died 1880), both of England.
They had a child, James Thomas Evans, who was born in England in 1831 and died in Benalla, Australia, in 1896. He married Elizabeth Griffiths, who was born in England in 1835 and, I believe, died in Wales in 1905.
I would love to find the parents of Thomas Evans and his wife, Mary Thorne, if possible.
I would also like to find the parents of Elizabeth Griffiths, as I no nothing about her or her lineage.
Thank you.

Hi,

It appears that several members of the Bollom family were married more than once. I note that Julia Mary Catterson is also listed as Julia Mary Berry on occassion, so I expect that she was married more than once, as well.

I have been told by an elderly family member that she believes John O'Donnell passed away in Kalgoorlie prior to 1925; and that he is possibly buried there. She has heard over the years that John -or 'Joe' as she knew him as- died of pneumonia. There is some speculation that he died a drunk; but that is all the information that I could muster.  The names of his parents are unknown by my relative, but she once heard a rumour that he was raised in an orphanage that burned down.

Warm regards,

Cork / Re: Holy (Holley or Holly?) Family

Hi Shane,

Thank you so much for the information - it was greatly appreciated.

I have searched Griffiths Valuations and found numerous Holy's listed in the parish of Castlemagner. I am somewhat confident that there's a connection, due to the similarity of the Christian names mentioned and those of my Australian-born ancestors. Jeremiah Holy, who travelled from Cork, had sons named Timothy, John Thomas, George and Michael - those mentioned in the Valuations. They may have been common names, admittedly, but it was not unusual to name one's children after siblings (or other family members).  Furthermore, with the exception of Patrick Holy in Kilbrin and James Holy in Kilroe, there are no other Holy's listed. I can only assume that these Holy's are connected to Jeremiah; although that may be as far as I'll ever get.

I believe Jeremiah was a Presbyterian.

Thanks again for your information and time.

Warm regards,
harkel25.

Greetings,

The Bollom's certainly lived interesting lives.  Elvina seems to have wed on multiple occassions and was quite happy to incorporate John O'Donnell's surname into the name of a daughter that she allegedly had with Henry Dawson. Furthermore, George William Bollom's second marriage was to his niece, Alica Julia Dawson. (I actually have a photograph of the two taken on their wedding day.).  I wonder how scandalous such undertakings were considered to have been back then.

I will see if I can find out when John O'Donnell died, approximately. The hardest bit will be finding out where, I imagine.

Warm wishes,
Harkel25.

Cork / Holy (Holley or Holly?) Family
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 11:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm desperately seeking information about my great, great grandfather, Jeremiah Holy. I believe that he was born in Cork in 1814. Although I understand his family name to be 'Holy' it was listed as 'Holley' when he left for Australia aboard the ship, the 'Mary Nixon'; and was consequently recorded as 'Holly' on occassion.

I know nothing of Jeremiah's life in Ireland. I would, in the very least, be happy just to identify his parents (neither of whom were listed on his 1884 death certificate).  I believe that his children may have been named after his siblings (or other family members), if this helps. His children were:

George

Michael

John Thomas

All of Jeremiah's children were born in Australia to Elizabeth Barry, who also travelled from Cork aboard the 'Mary Nixon'.

I would be very appreciative to anybody who may be able to help identify Jeremiah's true surname, parents, etc. or who may be able to point me in the right direction.

Thank you for your time.

Warm regards,
harkel25

Hi,

Thank you all so much. I am extremely grateful that you took the time to provide me with such valuable information.

Sue, it is indeed interesting to note the additon of the name 'O'Donnell' to Josephine, who was born in 1892. It is perhaps one of the reasons that very little was discussed - or consequently known - about the family.

JM, it may just be a coincidence, but I'm excited, noneteless. I will endeavour to make contact with Mr O'Donnell, in the hope that he can let me know, one way or another.

Unfortunately, I am unsure as to the names the of John O'Donnell's parents. He was born in England (or so I believe) and travelled and performed with a circus. I am not entirely sure as to what state or territory he died in, but I believe there may have been a connection to S.A.

Once again, thank you all so much.

Warm regards,
harkel25.
