Thanks all, definitely some good leads to start exploring.

In reply to an earlier message, John Rumbold's son, also called John Rumbold was born in 1832 and married Mary Wallis in 1855.

Hi I'm a bit stuck.  Looking into a branch of the family, the Rumbolds who all came from Salisbury.
I've found my 4x Great Grandfather, John Rumbold (b 1812 approx) in Salisbury. John later married Elizabeth Dinham (b 1807 approx) in July 1828 in Salisbury.  Can anyone assist with how I can go back further?

Initial searching reveals Rumbold was/is a very popular name in Salisbury!

Many thanks,

Thanks everyone so far. I found the Boswells reference on georgianera.wordpress.com searched under major Smith.
Very difficult tracing this branch as there were no records kept in the family of any names. Impressed I'd got this far back so thank you all again. Looks like major Smith was a popular name in the late 1600s and 1700s in this part of the country.

Thanks David for the quick reply.

I'm actually trying to trace Major Smith who was married to Mary (don't know her maiden name) they had a son Charles Augustus Smith and it was at Charles baptism that the Boswells were present. It's the only evidence I've got of my great x5 grandfather's birth.
I can't trace his parent Major and Mary Smith... wonder if they were one and the same with the Boswells?

I'm trying to trace Major Smith b1780 approx and his wife Mary. They had a son Charles Augustus Smith b1803 approx in Lincolnshire. Baptised in Stamford in 1803. The only reference I've found  is a small piece on Genes Reunited and online. A gypsy family Major Boswell and his wife Mary attended the same baptism. Many thanks for any information.

Yes, there is an Arterton connection with Gravesend/Northfleet, I'll have to dig out the paperwork for it.

Hey,

Have found out the Hollands are/were a large gypsy family - father-in-law pleased to know that what was long a family myth is confirmed...I hope!

Am in Kent and have been researching my mothers family - Artertons from Walsham and have now branched out into the other halfs family.

I'll def have to investigate the newspaper archive.

Thanks again!!  ;D

Hi Ray,

Thanks so much for the information. Def the same person.

Think I've unearthered a family secret as Cyril was unknown....and changing his name to that of his aunt confirms it.   (My mother would have been his niece).

Where did you find the information?

Regards,
Richard
