The Common Room / Re: Birks family derbyshire
« on: Friday 30 August 19 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the info, done some searching, and think I might have found something but not certain. There is a John Birks born Nov 1777 in Ashover, father is Abraham c1755 and Elizabeth Blanksby, they married in 1771. They had 3 girls Grace 1783, Anne 1790, Mary 1786 and 4 boys Joseph 1788, John 1777, George 1780 and Abraham 1775. Still no other info on John and Ann, but this John having a brother George and (George 1814 ) named his sons with biblical names so thinking could be a connection. Would appreciate some feedback as to weather i'm just clutching at straws, or could be on to something thanks.

Yes he did marry Ann Shaw, I have him and Ann on 1841 to 1881 census. There have been some other people who have got parents name John and Anne, but they married and had children 4-6 years after George was born. Have tried to look on the 1841 census to see if I could find any other Birks's, who lived near by, but as of yet not found any. Thought of looking on an 1841 census for Spring garden area which I think is Buxton, as that is where George was baptised as he was living in Ilkeston in 1841.

Hi I am looking for the parents of George Birks baptised on Oct 4th 1814 St Peter's Derbyshire. They are John and Anne, living at Spring Gardens and he is a crate maker, but I cannot find any other info on them. I cannot find any other births for John and Anne so assuming that George was an only child. George was living in Ilkeston Derbyshire on the 1841 census. Thanks to anyone in advance for any info  ???

Thanks everyone for the info, i think that will be Henry on the 1881 census. I also now think that May and Harry are Henry's children, and that the marriage to James didn't last, but Mary and Henry couldn't marry. Will now have to research the Clowes line for May, and get a copy of her marriage cert. Thanks again for all your help guys.

I have a birth for May 6b 298 her Mother's name won't be on it as that came later in about 1911 Her Mother's name was Anne Lavinia (she was known by Lavinia on other census) Holmes, and her Grandmother was a Lavinia Barnes. It's says Mary Lizzie Ball and James Cosby on the marriage record, june quarter 1901 6b 324. Henry Clowes was born in Hartshill Stoke on Trent. There must be some connection but just can't find it . Thanks to all who have replied.

Hi i'm trying to find out what happened to James Cosby 1873-1937 born Longton Stoke on trent. He married Mary Lizzie Ball in 1901 at St James Longton, they went on to have 4 children Annie 1902-1902, Doris 1903 -1992, Harry 1905 and May 1907-1988. Mary died in 1910 and the children are on the 1911 census living with their Aunt and family and also Grandmother. Here's a puzzle on this census there is also an Henry Clowes age 44 married with 2 children,(wife not on here), now Harry's full name is Clowes Cosby, i can't fine any other records for this Henry. Also when May marries in 1931 she uses the name Clowes not Cosby, as she does when her daughter is born. James pops up again with a death in 1937. If anyone can unravel this mystery i would be very grateful thanks

The Lighter Side / step relationships
« on: Monday 21 May 12 10:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My Son has just got married, and my husband is his stepdad (although he dosent call him that). My in-laws asked what relation our Daughter-in-law would be to them, and i said Granddaughter as they call my Son their Grandson, they said not. If my Son is their Step Grandson, then she must be their Step Granddaughter, but as we dont refer to being Step whatever they should call her Granddaughter. I know its a bit confusing  ???, but my Son has always called them Nan and Grandad. Hope someone can clarify this.

                 Many Thanks
                    Maxine

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: grave ownership
« on: Monday 22 August 11 20:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have found the grave of my Great grandparents, but there is no longer a grave stone. I would like to know if i would be able to put a memorial vase on the grave, so that i could leave flowers, or would i need permission first. I have the same problem with my Grandads grave, but that is in a small churchyard. Would they let me put anything on the grave there. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Regards Maxine

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: John Leese Caverswall
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Does anyone have any info on who John's parents were. On the 1841 census there are a Thomas Leese born 1806, who could be his brother. There is also a William born 1771, wife is supposed to be Nancy, but i cannot find any marriages for a William and Nancy ot any births for a John or Thomas with parents of those names. On 1841 cencus William has no wife, and there are quite a few deaths between 1841 and 1851 so any could be William. Also no deaths for a Nancy Leese from 1837-1841. If anyone can help would be very grateful. Regards Maxine.
