Hi Tom

Yes! I have rediscovered the Gale Newspapers Online & have been happily searching for a couple of hours this afternoon. We have free access through our Auckland Libraries membership. What a great resource to access from the comfort of home - but it is a bit addictive.

Thanks again for your help & suggestions. Will start to broaden my searches - who knows what I might discover!

Regards
Helen

Hi Tom

Thank you so much for the information! It nicely ties together all the information I had collected regarding William South & now ties in Mary Ann as well. In 1861 they were recorded apart, William obviously at his place of work and I couldn't until now confirm that Mary Ann was his wife.

To be honest I hadn't even thought about newspaper reports. I think I can access these through our libraries as well (I am in New Zealand). That will be my next task.

This was my first ever enquiry using this forum - I hope everyone else is as helpful as you!  :)

Regards
Helen

Hello

Elizabeth SOUTH was born in Cosham about 1819, married Jonas UNDERWOOD in Alvestoke on 22 Oct 1848, died in 1870, buried in Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth.

I am looking for her siblings William, born about 1821 & Mary Ann, born 1823. Their parents were Joseph & Jane (nee HASLETT), married in 1817 at St Marys, Portsea. I have found no mention of Joseph after 1823, but in the 1861 census Jane is a widow. Jane died in 1875 in East Cosham.

In the 1871 census, is "my" William the William SOUTH who is proprietor of the East Cosham Tavern in Widley. If so, where is his wife?  In 1861 I have found a William South, born Cosham, who is a servant (married) in London.

Any help appreciated - thanks.
