The info I have access to via my mobile phone is limited but I can give you this much:

John 1849-1922 married Mary Palmer
 1858-1931

Their children were:

William 1881-1961 m Catherine Thacker in 1904
Alice 1884-1951 m George Robotham in 1904
Albert Bertie 1888-1917 died at Flanders
Blanche 1898-1949 m Harry Harrison 1917 Blanche & Harry were knocked down by a drunken driver & fatally injured in 1949

I have photographs of all these & can send you copies

Yes, I have all the newspaper reports on the murder & executions, I can send you copies next week - will need an email address of course

Questions for you....

Are you a Norfolk man?
Where does WH the murderer fit into the Hardiment tree?
Who did the tree at UEA and why?

Can't think of a nicer way to have my holiday disturbed!!!!  ;D

Jake, my grandmother was Blanche Hardiment 1898-1949. Do you have her on your tree?

Yes, Ive got the book  ;D

Welland will have got most of his info from the many newspaper reports at the time, mainly the Norfolk Chronicle, which stated that William had an 'insane' sister.
The book also has an excellent picture of his death mask which is held at the Castle Museum.

Hi Jake

I have recently found out quite a bit more about William Hardiment 1791 but I'm away on holiday until 28th Feb and don't have access to my notes until then.

From memory, his father, William, married Sarah Lincoln at Morley St Botolph in 1784. They had a daughter (I have not been able to find her - perhaps your Mary) who was in a lunatic asylum. Both William and Sarah had died long before their son committed the murder for which he was hung on Castle Hill.

I have been unable to find baptism records for William or Sarah in order to move forward with this. Nor do I have evidence that they actually fit into the tree of Robert Hardiment/Rebecca Heron.

Perhaps we can work on this together?

Yes I get that, but it seems amazing, at the time the Census was taken in 1881, that Charlotte was obviously aware that she was born in Hull, but between them she and the enumerator came up with Thirsk in 1881. Very odd that.......
Anyway I think I can safely forget Thirsk and concentrate on Hull - so a positive outcome  ;D

many thanks Gill

Ah thanks that's very helpful. I hadn't noticed before but the first, in fact the only, mention of Thirsk is in 1881 the other Census all say Hull.

Where on earth would Charlotte have got Thirsk from? I can't imagine how she would have even heard of it......... unless there was, after all, a family connection.

Thanks for looking Carol

I'm waiting for the marriage certificate to arrive and was just sending for Charlotte's birth certificate when your message came through.

I was wondering if there are any records for Thirsk Workhouse online?

My great-great grandmother, Charlotte Crowe, was born about 1857 in Thirsk, Hull.

Her mother Jane Maria Munford b.1830 married Henry Crowe b.1835 in Norwich, Norfolk in 1853. They had a son Henry b.1855.

Jane and Henry were both born in Norwich as were at least 2 generations before them. I cannot find any family connections to Hull or work out why Jane may have gone to Hull to have Charlotte.

However there are more twists to the tale. In 1861 Jane is in Norwich, as Housekeeper to a John Bayes who is listed as father to both Charlotte and Henry jnr. In 1871 Jane and John are married and Charlotte is listed as born in Norwich.

Could someone look up Charlotte's birth for me please? Could she have been born in Thirsk Workhouse?
