Travelling People / Re: Hawkers

Hi,

I am researching Isaiah Carter (born approx 1824) who on one census described as a licensed hawker.

I have seen the post with the extract from 'my ancestors were gypsies' saying for references to licences use jeremy gibson's quarter sessions records for family historians, does anybody know where I can find this?

HI,

I am having trouble finding the Bell & Yew Inn,

I would like to know where it is, or where it was, and also any history known about it. My 5x Great Grandfather, Thomas Davies, lived there in 1871.

Many Thanks.

Hi

Just wanted to say Thank you for you advice and information.

Do you know of any websites that are good for trying to trace Gypsy families?

It is quite odd that there are two entries for an Eliza Carter born to Robert and Esther Carter, I wonder why it would be entered in two places, unless they are two families with the same names and dates, seems very unlikely though.

Hi,

Sorry you are right the IGI says Romsey not Southampton my mistake.

Yes I have Census records as follows

1871 census says born 1823/24 Ealing Hampshire
1881 census - born 1823/24 Southampton
1891 census - 1825/26 Southampton
1901 census - 1821/22 Southampton

1912 Death certificate reads he was born 1817/18

Isaiah was married to Lucy Wells that is the right family that ricky has found, the fact that they were hawkers and basket makers, and the names of their children and grandchildren lead me to think the family may have been gypsy.

Hi,

The IGI shows that my gggrandfather Isaiah Carter was christened in Southampton 1825, with his parents being Robert and Esther Carter.

I cannot find any further information for Robert and Esther Carter, I wonder if anyone is able to help, any information is appreciated. There is a possibility that they are Gypsies.

Thanks.

I think Charlwood must be on the border of Surrey/Sussex as I have heard of it being in Sussex as well, but the census records are in Surrey for my family.

Hi,

I am trying to find any information on No 34 Railway Approach, East Grinstead particularly in December 1913.

My grandfather, Leslie Breden, was born there. As he was illegitimate I am trying to find out why his mother Elsie Breden (my great grandmother) went there when she was from Charlwood, Surrey.
