Thats a shame - I thought I was onto something with the electoral rolls - I don't think I will ever solve the mystery.  Thanks for info though it will save me going on a wild goose chase

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Electoral Rolls
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to electoral rolls for Yorkshire for the years 1897, 1903 and 1906.  I have birth certs for my grandmother and two of her brothers and I would like to check to see the name of the person living at the addresses given on the birth certs as I think there may possibly be a 'name change/alias' for the parents.  I have my grandmothers brother Ernest Gilbert born December 1897 fathers name Harry Gilbert, address 4 Sydney Street, another brother Harry Gilbert born February 1903 fathers name Harry Gilbert, address 3 Garfield Terrace, York and my grandmother Lily Gilbert born January 1906, fathers name Ernest Gilbert, address Long Lane, Harlow Hill, Harrogate.  I can find no trace of the family in the 1901 census but have found them on the 1911 census when they are living in Dublin Ireland.  My grandmothers birth cert is the only certificate that the fathers christian name is Ernest.  I would be very interested to see if he is listed on the electoral rolls under either Ernest or Harry.  Any advice regarding further research into the family would be really gratefully received

Yes I think they were but I have not been able to find them on 1901 census. It's very frustrating!

Sorry I'm getting a bit carried away.  I put posts on for my fathers side of the family (the Haywards) and my mothers side (the Sargents, Gilberts and Fitzsimmons).  I am really surprised to have received replies so quickly!!  On the Gilbert/Fitzsimmons side I have very little information.  I know my great grandmother was from Ireland but have been trying to trace a marriage record for years with no success.  I have been unable to trace a record of the family in the 1901 census but have a record of them in the 1911 census of Ireland.  I am wondering whether Ernest/Harry and Lizzie did actually get married.  I have been led to believe that Lizzie died in Ireland and I believe the family returned to Yorkshire after her death (I can remember Nan (Lily) telling me that she had to look after her brothers and sisters after her mother died as she was the eldest daughter).

Thanks for reply.  I am really trying to find out who John Hayward's (born 1820), parents were.  I have traced him back to 1841 census but he is not living at home with his parents.  The problem is I have no proof that his parents came from the Goudhurst area??????????

I have the 1901 census record with him on it.  The 1911 took me a while to track down as he is living with his grandparents on his mothers side and they have listed his age incorrectly.
