not sure what you have found out but your James George Williams was killed during the 1st Arakan Campaign.1942/43. The Royal Scots were attached to the 6th brigade of the 2nd British Division. The campaign was a disaster from start to finish and ended with a general withdrawal

if your dad got to India in 1944, I would suggest that he was perhaps already too late for Kohima. By the time he wouild have processed through the system, Kohima may well have finished as it was over by 22 june but started in mid March as the Japanese crossed the Chindwin then and advanced on Kohima by 4th April. Before this Kohima was a leave camp and no doubt after it would have served as a staging camp. Kohima was in India

ALL of the troops at Kohima were in the 14th Army. there were about 6 Indian regiments included in a total of about 22,000

The Burma Star assoc will only be able to give you his regiment and when he joined. you should try the Kohima Museum in York. The curator there is a great guy and very helpful....oh...wait a minute...that's ME!

The 1st Glosters didn't fight at Kohima. I thought that they were part of the troops captured in 42. the 10th Bn were Chindits - I think

Hi Michael
Thank you for this message. I was indeed in touch with your sister some years ago and she gave me some family details but then her email address went down and I couldn't get in touch again. Her married name was Helen Stevens or something like that. I was gutted that I couldn't get back in touch.

My uncle and his son are both named Thomas Albert after your granddad. They also carry the name McGrath.
Our great granddad is the same man which makes us 2nd cousins except that our great grandmas were different. James McGrath was my grandad and yours was his half brother.

Antrim / Re: living in Belfast in the 1800's
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
My first hint of relatives from Belfast is about 1850 but they start to increase from 1875 - present day so that would be my target. Most of my ancestors were illiterate and unskilled so they would have been on hard living in a hard living area

Cavan / Charters or Chartus
« on: Wednesday 26 October 11 22:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for details on a John Charters who was born about 1853. I have this from his death cert in 1927 which gives his age as 74. His wife was Annie Fenner and I found a reference to a marriage of John Chartus - a pensioner - and annie Fenner of Barrack Hill in Cavan in 1888 (I think) Family oral history has John Charters as a soldier for about 19 years but I cannot find any detail on him apart from this marriage reference. His wife Annie was considerably younger than him being born about 1868 as evidenced from her death cert.

Can anyone out there help with this. He is my brick wall as well as being my great granddad.

Thanks
Bob
