Armed Forces / Military Details
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 00:28 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find details of my father who served in WW2.  He was in the 8th Army Royal Engineers from 1939 and I believe he was a driver.  He served in North Africa and had the Africa Star and he landed in Normandy D Day plus 1.  He was mentioned in dispatches at some point but he would never speak about his time during WW2.  I would love to know why he was mentioned in dispatches.  My searches on line have so far not lead to anything.  His full name was Leonard Douglas Baker, born in Poplar 1918.

The Common Room / Ancestry Subscriptions

Have thought about subscribing to Ancestry but can you tell me what you get for the money. Do you actually get access to birth certificates etc or just general information.  I have been tracing back my family for quite a few years now but having lived in New Zealand for the past 14 years, the cost is rather high in comparison to our income so I wanted to make sure it would actually be helpful and useful for expanding my search.

This was his problem as he asked for a copy and they said he could not have one because has been adopted.  This was only just over a year ago.

There in lies a problem as I emigrated to New Zealand 13 years ago.  Perhaps I can contact them by email. Thank you for your response.

Family History Beginners Board / Can records be changed back
« on: Monday 19 August 19 07:52 BST (UK)  »
I know this is not Ancestry related but I wonder if any of you wonderful people can advise on a situation.
I had a son to my first marriage who was born in 1975.  That marriage ended and I married for a second time.  My first husband suggested it would be better if my new husband brought up our son as his own.  To cut a long story short my son was adopted into my new marriage.  I did not realise at the time that although I am his birth mother, I would have to adopt my own son into the new marriage.  His name was subsequently changed.  Several years later,  much to my dismay I visited what was Somerset House and looked up his birth and there is a handwritten entry noting that he is now entered into  the adopted child register.  All indication that I am his birth mother now gone.  He changed his name back  to his birth name many years ago but we would both like the entry into the adopted child register to either be removed or it be noted somewhere that his adoptive and birth mother are the same person,  this situation has caused problems in obtaining documentation, cannot recall what it was but am checking with my son,

Aberdeenshire / Re: Clifton House, Insch, Aberdeenshire

Have not seen any census from Scotland with my great grandmother on at the moment.  Her name was Alexis Robb and it appears she is on 1881 and 1891 census but I do not have any access to these to see full details.  I do have 1911 census but by then she was living in England and no longer in Scotland.

Aberdeenshire / Clifton House, Insch, Aberdeenshire
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Having done some research on my maternal family tree, I have come across many entries from other people of family member being listed as resident at Clifton House Insch Aberdeenshire.  My great grandmother has this listed as her address in her bible.  Would anyone be able to find out what Clifton House was as there appear to have been a lot of people residing there in the late 1800,s and early 1900’s.  Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Alexis Robb to George Furzerth

Very confused here as on the 1891 census George Furze is stated as birth 1857 and on the 1911 census his birth is stated as 1861. They are the same person as the wife and children names are all the same.  Have looked for more on Alexis Robb. I can’t find another marriage, she was still single at age 21 and living in Alford Aberdeenshire so I have no clue as to why their supposed marriage is recorded on census as being 1883 yet there appears to be no record of marriage anywhere.  My cousin in the UK has her bible with all of the children’s birth dates recorded in it, I will ask if there is any other information in the bible.
