Hi Emm,

Sorry for the delay in replying but my PC has died. I'll try and get the picture of Harry, Fred and Clifford scanned as soon as my main PC is fixed.

I know what you mean about their generation keeping themselves to themselves. The impression that we got was that there had been some big 'falling out' in the family, but Dad's diary seems to contradict this.

Harry demobbed from the RAF and lived in Blackpool until his death in 1995. My sister - Glennys - and I both remain in the Blackpool area.

I don't know where Harold fits in, but I seem to recall hearing that he died around 1943.

Are you in touch with any of your (our?) cousins. I'd love to hear more about them.

Take care
Dave

Hi Emm,

Wow! It's great to finally find a family member!

My Dad very seldom spoke about himself or his family - occasionally recanting an old wartime story, but very little else. I seem to recall my Dad saying he was one of six children - five boys and a girl. I believe he was closest with his youngest brother, also joining the RAF with him. Would that be your father then?

Are there any surviving members from that generation, do you know? Do you know what happened to Rebecca (sister) or the other brothers?

We have a picture of Fred and Clifford from my parent's wedding - Clifford would have been early teens...

Sorry... so many questions!
Dave

Hi Emm,

I've just spoken to my sister and neither of us are sure which squadrons Harry was in - we know that he joined up circa 1936 with his younger brother (Arthur?). I am still awaiting a copy of his service records but apparently he spend a period serving on Lancaster bombers out of UK before serving in the middle east for a great deal of the war and post war. He left the RAF in about 1959, I think, after 24 years.

Apparently at the age of 16 he joined the Army, but was 'kicked out' when they found he'd lied about his age.

He married Pearl Andrewartha December 1958 (I think - my sister has the certificate and I'm working from memory!) in Blackpool. Fred was best man and was married to May. Clifford was their son. At some point whilst they remained in contact, Fred and May divorced and we believe that Fred went to live in a YMCA hostel. Of Clifford we have no further knowledge.

Harry remained in Blackpool until his death January 1995.

Both my sister and I recall mention of Harold, but know nothing else of him. Could it be a nickname?

We recently found an old diary from 1950 as my Dad was joining a new squadron in Mauripur. In the diary he refers to 'Mother' and 'Mother R'. One entry also states 'Dad passed away at 6.00pm'. Any ideas?

I believe that his Mother - Rebecca - remarried circa 1936. Could 'Dad' be his step-dad?

Any ideas greatfully received
Dave

Hi Emma,

Great to hear from you! If I've read your post correctly, your Father was Arthur which could make us cousins...

My Dad never really spoke much about his parents and family so I'm really struggling to fit pieces together. Harry was born Feb 1914. My sister seems to recall him saying that Rebecca (his Mother) used to refer to Joseph Arthur as 'a cripple' and we thought he'd died whilst my Father was still young.

Can you shed any light on this? It'll be really exciting if this all links up!

Regards
Dave

Hi Jake,

I think that Joseph Arthur Barnes was my grandfather!

My Father was Harry Barnes (1914 - 1995) born Birmingham whose mother was Rebecca (Moore). Harry had a number of brothers (inc Harold, Fredrick and Christopher?) and one sister (Rebecca). I believe that Fred may have had a son born circa 1945 called Cliford.

My father lost contact with the family when he joined the RAF circa 1936, only remaining in contact with Fred until about 1957

If this sounds like it fits in with your knowledge of the family, please could you get in touch?

Regards
David Barnes
