Thanks all. Sorry for bumping this thread back up after so long but I got busy with work and completely forgot about this.
I did think the Annie Bowness in the workhouse was my Annie at first, with Mathew Bowness who I assumed to be her father. I can't remember what changed my mind about that it's been too long since I've looked at this, cobwebs in the brain!
My Annie had a daughter Annie (my GGM), I have the younger Annie's death certificate which gave me her date of birth (July 1909), I then got her birth certificate which listed her mother as Annie Bowness, a charwoman of 21 Davy Street, Barrow, and her normal address as 1 Rampside Road, Barrow.
In the 1911 census I found what I think is both of them at 11 Davy Street, the older Annie listed as Sister-in-Law to the head and housekeeper, and the younger as niece. The older Annie is also listed as single, and on the younger Annie's birth certificate no father is named. Also, the handwriting and signature on the 1911 census at this address (completed by Annie Bowness) is the same as the signature of Annie Bowness on the younger Annie Bowness's birth certificate. If it is the right Annie (I am confident it is), aged 28 in 1911, then 1883 would make sense as year of birth.. however I have just realised that the census was in April, and 1883 Annie was born on 09 June 1883, which would make her 27 in April 1911, so it might be the 1882 Annie.
I think I have completely confused myself now
