Hi

May I suggest that you have a search on TROVE, this may help in the search

For the information of Jardiner, (in case you aren't aware of Australian records) these articles are from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. So births, deaths and marriage records are held in Victoria.

I'm wondering if a birth certificate of one of the children would give more information.

Also, have you tried asking for information from the Clarence River Historical Society in Grafton? They do have some information on the Small family as they are Clarence River pioneers and first fleet convicts.

Hi Sue yes and it is driving me nuts!  LOL  I've added a quick snippet here re the family.  Ada was born in O'connell/Bathurst NSW.  Looks like three of the siblings were registered in Bathurst NSW. Many thanks Dianna

Is Ada Victoria the youngest child? Or did she have younger siblings?

If any of the siblings of the twin sisters are still alive, they may be able to find them. Do a Google search of adoption resource centres in Victoria and see if they are able to assist. Governments now recognise the importance of people affected by adoption knowing their histories.

Some browsers work better than others. When I was working in a library, we suggested the customer use a different browser if they had trouble accessing a site.

Hope this works, otherwise I believe I need to make a couple more posts before I can PM you (I'm still working it all out!)

I also read through the 80 page file on a rainy day!

It really seems that the authorities were so caught up with the origins of his name that nothing else mattered.

My guess is that he changed his name after the war, possibly to his birth name of Ellis.

He was aged in his 50s when he arrived in Australia. Do you know if there had been a marriage in Scotland?

The Lighter Side / Re: Transportation

Fascinating, thanks. The lady in question was an 18-year-old girl at the time, who had nicked the blanket from the family she was in service to, which may have made it worse for her. I wonder if politics came into play with these sentences - I know the empire was settling Australia at the time, and they needed a good supply of young blood to do the work. Maybe the magistrates were 'encouraged' to dole out transportation for trivial crimes? Just a thought.
Actually Australia was settled as a way for the UK to get rid of some of their huge prison population. The first settlers in Australia were shiploads of prisoners.
Ultimately I think many of them, or their descendants, were better off afterwards. They could own land and run businesses.
