I suppose anything is possible, perhaps he intended to return, but never did.

Often these little mysteries will remain unsolved for us.

You're welcome.   Those old documents can make for some interesting reading. ;)

He did.  Had some property and shares.  It's all there in the documents in the estate file.

I think this could be your man.  His wife is given as Jessie nee Malcolm, so it fits with your info.

It seems he died in Scotland, so must have returned there when he retired.  It gives his parents, wife and children's names.

It is available on Family Search, but if you click through the images on the link it is the entire estate file. It appears he still had assets in South Africa, hence the Probate file registered in SA.

It is possible that he was single at the time of his death and had children but never married the mother.  I found that had happened on my hubby's side of the family.  His grandfather never married his grandmother but they had 9 children together.  If he did not acknowledge them as his, it's possible they would not be mentioned on his estate etc.

Hi

There is a reference to G. Brooks no. 5125 Sherwood Forresters (Derbyshire Regiment) on the website angloboerwar.com.

Slightly wounded at Vlakfontein 29 May 1901.

There is an account of the regiments activities here:

You can also upload images to your Ancestry tree from FS if you download them to your computer first then upload them to your tree.   I don't have a sub for Ancestry so it's really the only way I can attach documents to my tree on there. ;)

FS has a very large collection of South African records and more are added all the time.

The court case in 1902, the source code  ZTPD was divorce proceedings against Richard brought by Lilian but later withdrawn.

The 1910 file appears to be a letter enquiring about an estate:

The 1942 Estate File for Richard.  If you move through the images, his Will is there as well.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS9G-FNJ4?i=256&cc=2520237&cat=188051

These are all on Family Search, usually my first stop for South African research.
