Norfolk / Re: Anguish Lake all four(five) of them

Hi cuz (5th cousin once removed I think - but that gets me muddled too!)

Well done on the super sleuthing with the 1851 census. He really was a naughty boy. Can't say I fancy the tread wheel in walsingham house of correction. No wonder he died in his 40s... I must go visit that next time I'm up in Norfolk as my grandparents still live in the area.

Hi,
I have four or possibly five generations of Lakes with the christian name Anguish.

His Son Anguish Thomas Born 1814 married Lucy

                   Dave

Hi Dave - your ancestors are the same as mine here.  :) Anguish and Lucy were my GGGG Grandparents - I'm descended via their eldest, Mary, who married James Callaby on Xmas day 1860.

Did you know that our Anguish was a criminal. 3 months for larceny in 1842 and 3 years for sheep stealing in 1854- served in Norwich castle (the only prison in the area). He was lucky he wasn't deported for a repeat offence, as happened just a few years earlier.

Have you seen the will at all of (his probable grandad) Anguish Lake? Would be interested to know what he left!

Richard

Hi. Your post was enlightening for me, but not quite in the way I was expecting, as you've highlighted an error in my research. I've mixed up a Mary LAKE (Born approx 1836) and Mary Ann LAKE (Born approx 1833)...  :-[

This bit of my family tree was pretty much the first I looked at about 3 years aso and I've never thought to question it since. In my naivety, I wasn't thorough enough with fact checking, and discounted some red flags. I think was a bit excited about the potential Gibraltar and Ireland connection.

Re-doing my research last night, my family line goes back to Mary LAKE, who married James CALLABY on 25th December 1860. Where I had it wrong before is with her parents. It now looks like they are Anguish Thomas LAKE and Lucy SMITH; not Tobias LAKE and Jane...

I'm not sure how/if the two LAKE families are connected.

I also seem to have "traded" a solider (Tobias), for a criminal, Anguish  :-[ . It  looks like he was imprisoned twice. I have yet to track him down on the 1851 census too, as he isn't with the rest of the family - maybe he was locked up a third time...

Hi Pamal - I just found your post on the internet about our shared ancestor, Tobias Lake (my 4 x great grandfather). I'm descended through his daughter Mary (born in "Galt", Ireland just before they came over to Docking) and the family that descended from her that stayed in North Norfolk.

I was thrilled about your enlightened idea of the hamlet of Gibraltar near Skegness being Tobias's origin (hardly suprising a census taker had never heard of the place), and I just wondered if you had uncovered anything further there since your posting in February?

I also see that you have discovered that he served in the 64th Regiment of Foot (which would explain how he came by an Irish wife). I never knew that Tobias served in the army though until I read your post - could you share the information you have?

I'll happily share the info I have collected about his descendants, if you are interested. From the looks of the names you are researching, I think Tobias and wife Jane are probably our most recent joint ancestors though.
